I think linux diestros are really good, very stables and faster than windows, the problem is takes a little while to learn to thinker with them, ❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮🤔🤔🤔🤔
I understand the idea, but Windows is not currently replacable.
Lets thank Valve for pushing the envelope with Proton to get Linux gaming off the starting line.. Seriously if Steam wasn't on Linux right now about half might still be on Windows just for gaming.
And don't forget, Apple is right up your rear view with their computers being very capable gaming machines..
Linux has to get the big game developers over to running on Linux, I'm looking at Epic Games and Ubisoft.
If the epic games launcher was compatible with Linux out of the box and you could just be running Linux and install Fortnite (for example), then kids, teens would switch en-masse.
I think the top Distros that will replace Windows for new users will be Linux Mint and or Ubuntu. Base Debian's packages and kernel is too outdated to be viable for most desktop use cases without a more involved process, the average Windows user will not enjoy using Debian especially if they are using newer hardware and Nvidia which needs the latest software and drivers. The average Windows user will not like Arch Linux lol. Also Fedora's DNF supports parallel downloads too (But I agree Fedora is another good candidate) Manjaro on the other hand is not a good recommendation, the developers don't seem to know what they are doing especially since their bright idea of fixing outdated SSL certificates by having you roll back your system's clock as a "fix" not to mention they keep breaking the AUR all the damn time, also now they implemented an opt-out telemetry system which is worse than even Ubuntu's telemetry system. Manjaro is the devil I don't think that is a good replacement for Windows. For a noob friendly Arch based distro I think CachyOS or EndeavourOS is better for that.
top 5 linux distros that could replace windows:
1. Any
2. Literally Any
3. Seriously, Any
4. No really, Any.
5. Except deepin.
compatibility is the big issue imo, or at least the fear of incompatibility. i asked my old man if he wanted to install mint on his old laptop he's afraid that libreoffice wouldn't be compatible with microsoft office. i use arch personally, it's as stable as you make it to be. updates this year had been phenomenal, even if i update every package the moment they're released
my top 5 personal list for beginners
arch linux: youtubers use it so it cant be that hard. archinstall or something, they say its easy
nixos: its immutable so you cant break it easily, even comes with a calamari installer
freebsd: the oldest linux distro so it should have a ton of support right? really solid *linux* distro
gentoo: building from source that sounds like fun, and you pick your system components like bob the builder, easily enough
lfs: gives you a nice pdf book to read, and you don't even have to download anything. helps you learn about the linux or something, it should be the first thing you do
jokes aside i like your list, all solid picks, no obscure niche distros that small linux youtubers love to recommend
You can configure DNF in fedora to use parallel downloads.
The root of the issues runs much deeper, me thinks. No distro will ever be good enough to people wishing to switch from Windows, as long as they don't accept the fundamental differences between them. A whole different way of thinking. Only then can people even begin trying to decide on thingies like stable/rolling, GNOME/Plasma, etc…
