I don't really have a persistent setup, I just open private windows for what I need at the time then close them. I don't think this browser could add much to that.
Vivaldi has all that and more, including an encrypted sync feature.
Having used Arc on Mac and Windows has caused me to be a bit underwhelmed by Zen so far. It’s got a lot of potential though and I hope as development progresses it does things somewhat more like Arc. Especially the ability for to switch between workspaces in a single window.
Looks like Zen is the Arc alternative for Linux. For now, almost all antiviruses see Zen as a trojan 🤷
mic is to low
Hi John! Very nice. I don't have any experience with Zen but looks like a great way to organize your work. I wish I've known about Zen back a couple of years ago when I was working from home. Thanks for the information.
Appreciate the review, it is good and looks on Zen from a user and very practical perspective.
I understand what kind of people would like the Zen browser – people, who usually end up with a ton of open tabs with sites and who feel, they need some sort of organizing things.
I was the same some years ago, but honestly I'm not like that anymore, thus I don't find this kind of browsing to be my thing.
No matter how you organize it – 20-30 or even more opened tabs are 20-30 opened tabs. It's a mess. If not on the screen, then in your head.
I've changed my habits – now I open just 1-2-3 tabs, no more (even that is a lot in my eyes now). Only if I make some research I may open some more tabs, but that will be temporary, until I gather the info I'm looking at. After that I will either close the tabs, or if something is very important – I can bookmark it.
I guess I'm sorting my browsing, using the bookmark bar – I use it in a similar way to Zen browser's workspaces. I create folders and put links, that fall into that category inside. Works very well for me, and this way I don't need ton of tabs open, to eat my memory and slow down the browser.
Btw – often, when the browser is acting strangely and buggy, no matter what browser that is – in at least 90% of those cases – clearing the browser cache and cookies and then restarting it – fixes the issue.
Haven't heard about this browser before, will need to look into it, but having several different browsers for different activities is rationl from the security point of view. You don't want to do everything, including banking and entertainment in one browser.
Zen uses Gecko which is Mozilla's web engine..It's still slow compared to Blink from Chrome..You can't make things any quicker. If you're happy with Gecko good but I hate it it's sluggish..
That's how I use the bookmarks sidebar in Firefox. It used to be the default view, but now they hide it in the settings.
Zen looks okay.. the power that it seems to lack is the inability to switch between vertical & horizontal tabs in the settings.. but it's other features look pretty cool.
Yeah it's pretty new. It's still in alpha actually. But yeah, not even close to the first one to use tabs on the side or workspaces. Vivaldi, Opera, Arc, Edge so have both I believe
I am on Debian 12 and it's not in the package manager but you can download and install it from the website. Either as a Tar file or an Appimage. Which you can just run. It works I have tested it out. Debian has Firefox ESR which I don't like as I like an up to date browser. So I use Waterfox which I install in the same way downloading from the website.
I am using Zen now. It is just what I was looking for. Chrome based browsers (google, edge, brave, vivaldi etc) are not working too well on Wayland anymore, especially for video. Zen uses the Mozilla Firefox engine. It is not finished yet but it is very usable – no crashes (yet) and just enough features for me and I can still sync with Firefox on my phone and Tablets !
