ubuntu mate removed the welcome app and software boutique this release for some reason, thats why the welcome app wasnt there.
also the steam snap is horrible and will just stop certain games from loading, like paradox games such as stellaris/hearts of iron etc.
I tried i and liked it i had a minor issue
When i removed snaps completely and block it
When i restarted my pc the issue was gone

I like Cinnamon more than MATE, despite them being extremely similar. Cinnamon just feels nicer to me. Both are great though.
And yeah, I also dislike snaps. It's why I avoid Ubuntu too. x-x
Regarding steam not showing up in status bar, might be because you launched it from terminal and when you exit it kills the process.
