Thousands of Windows Users Will Lose Their Data

In this video I discuss how Microsoft requiring bitlocker encryption by default in a new build of windows 11 could cause people …

  1. I already deal with this on a weekly basis. A customer signs into a Microsoft account unknowingly when setting up their computer then cant remember the password for it years later when i need to recover the data from the drive.

  2. Work as technicians.
See this too many times before.
Worse case, 40% of my customer didn't have the key on their account.
Or probably have another account that they forget about.
Only solution? bye bye data, fresh install.

  3. On Linux you can encrypt some directory..
And you have to type in the password each time you access that partition / directory.
Now that makes sense. You keep everything "standard" and then you create a secure area – that you can copy as a volume somewhere else – but… you will remember the password / key because you have to type it in everytime you access those files.

  4. I understand and appreciate Microsoft's recent attempts to make Windows 11 more hardened going forward, but BitLocker is not it. Unless they redesign the install flow to make it super obvious and user friendly that you need to keep the recovery key somewhere safe that's NOT on the Windows partition…. yeah thats not happening

  5. I don't think it's that big of a deal. macOS has enabled full disk encryption by default for at least 5 years now, and you don't see too many users complaining about losing their data this way.

  6. 3:30 I strongly disagree with your notion that regular Windows users have no use for full disk encryption (proprietary or not). True, if someones laptop is stolen it is probably not to because the thief wants their files, but if it does happen, why would you want to let the thief have access to saved browser logins, private photos, documents, banking info, etc. It can be a lot worse than losing the hardware, and many do not realize they had a need for encryption before it is too late. Bitlocker is far from the perfect tool for solving this task (recovery keys, useless PIN-less mode), but don't just dismiss encryption like that.

  7. I think device encryption should be on by default with mobile devices, but they should also make it abundantly clear to end-users what is happening, why and the ramifications of them failing to take proper precautions. Every laptop in our house, including my kids' computers, use LUKS encryption and if they forget the password, it's stored in their KeePass on their phone so they can look it up. I do this because we do take trips from time to time, my kids take their devices to school, etc. They're regularly in places where they could be easily picked up and carried off which could give some bad actor access to our Nextcloud server, my kids' pictures that they've taken, homework, our tax documents, etc. I figure if a laptop gets stolen, sure they could always wipe and re-use the device, but none of our data should be accessible to the thieves.

BUT, my kids are a lot more tech savvy than most because I teach them things. They use password managers, they use Linux as their daily driver, etc. Most normies aren't going to know or care what Bitlocker is until it's too late, so I think as a corporation that sells Windows for money, they have an obligation to minimize the negative effects of this change.

  8. No thanks, there are way better, Open source encrytion Tools. If this will be mandatory or even worse a mandatory Microsoft Account… Then its time Not using windows any longer

  9. I'm a warranty repair tech for Dell and Lenovo, I run into this issue ALL THE TIME. It's really bad when it's a critical issue and the Computer won't power on, in that case you can't even suspend bitlocker which only works half the time anyway.

  10. We should stop calling our parents and grand parents boomer, it's like calling them 'idiots'. They grow up in a era without this kind of tech. I bet even you at some point will not be able anymore to keep up with newer technology, will you like to be called idiot from your kids ? – Not to mention the 'boomer agenda' was to separate the old generation with his wisdom made by a life time experience from the newer generation so they could be totally at the mercy of the beasts.

  11. I told my family when Windows 10 came out that if they wanted my support then buy a Chromebook or a Mac – Not that I liked Windows 8 or anything but Windows 7 was awesome. Chromebooks are fine for family members who just want to look at facebook and MacOS is fine for family members who want to sip latte whilst they do the same thing.
RIP windows for non business users, and as windows sysadmin I pray microsoft doesn't make this problem worse.

  12. So basically they want to get rid of local storage, and are setting that up now. Either that or we're nearing the end of the world script, and they're just assessing how things went and gathering up all the data before "the matrix" is wiped and reset.

  13. What will happen, is this message never will reach the massive and we will have a 2001 like scenario. Where there will be another microsoft hack which will force people using windows 11 bitlock. Or MS would remotely switch on bitlock without your knowledge.

  14. When I worked at a computer repair company we'd probably get the bitlocker screen with 2 clients a week and its just like you said. They dont know what bitlocker is. They dont know their Microsoft account. Sometimes they dont even know their password, its just muscle memory to type for them.
