The WWW On Redhat Linux 7.3 (Vmware Player 17)
As noted previously, RedHat Linux 7.3 was the last version of RedHat Linux that included the Netscape web browser. One could call it a bittersweet moment. Netscape made web-browsing on Linux very accessible. At the same time, Netscape had become bloated, and the Mozilla Foundation would carry on the work to slim down and create a really awesome browser, which they would eventually succeed. Later version of RedHat Linux would include the Mozilla Suite and later on Firefox, both based on that Netscape codebase.
Of course, I’m visiting websites from the 2001-2002 persuasion. I’ve used the Wayback Proxy to visit those sites. For those who are interested in using the Wayback Proxy, I ran the Jar file with the following command:
java -jar waybackmachineproxy.jar –httpServerPort “1280” –httpServerHost “192.168.56.1” –timestamp “20021001080044”
VMware Player 17 is virtualizing a workstation with a single core allocated to it. The host has a Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core CPU running at 4.2GHz. The VM has 256MB’s of RAM allocated to it, a VESA Compatible display adapter, and XFree86 is running at the screen resolution of 1024 by 768, 16-bit color depth. Also installed is a Ensoniq 1371 Audio Adapter, an ATAPI CD-ROM Drive, and a 16GB HD image with RedHat Linux 7.3 installed.
