South Africa illegal mining standoff: Hundreds remain underground in disused gold mine

A standoff between hundreds of illegal miners in a disused goldmine and police at the shaft’s entrance continues in South Africa’s North West Province. Volunteers have made little progress in bringing miners to the surface. The government says it’s now planning a professional rescue operation. That’s after a court ordered police to stop blocking access.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Stilfontein in North West province.

  1. everyone is so knowledgeable here, saying they are criminals and dont want to be arrested.

so that their plan is to stay down there.

so if that is their plan and motive, then what is their plan after that?

just die in there? I cannot think of any other outcome if their plan is to stay down there to avoid police.

  2. Its amasing that the cops just stand around doing nothing and hold onto a person who's looking into the shaft from falling in, what a joke.
The rest of this story shows a bunch of idiots doing nothing.
Except people turning it into a peep show.

  3. South Africa doesn't value the lives of their own impoverished citizens, yet they want to engage on the international stage as a human rights champion!

Fix your own issues first, in more morally advanced countries the authorities would have made a full-scale effort to rescue those trapped miners, yet in South Africa you leave them to rot under ground.

  4. who is the local bishop? corruption.
most of the local gangs are run by religious officials. cafod for example sends computer schoolrooms and supplirs which the local bishop collects and uses to bribe them. the internet school got turned into a pay to use cyber cafe for scam center calling and if you dont play ball your sent down the long road to be killed by the rebels (the priest keeps on hire).
my mother in law took a frag bullet to the chest whike pregnant cos of this. they both survived, he gsve up the charity work, too many dead volunteers before him.

  5. South Africans have very short memories it would appear. Now where is all that humanity, dignity, ubuntu and all those other things that got South Africans to rise up against the evil oppressor and gain freedom?

Just 30 years, those words were repeated parrot fashion by everybody to ensure the whole world knew what wonderful human beings South Africans are.

Lol. Ja ne. Slim vang sy baas.

  6. Its not a standoff, they don't want to get out, they even requested ARV's, the guys knows when they get out all the gold they have execraed would be confiscated and will face jail so they just stalling

  7. What do they mean the cops are not helping? Are they expecting them to go down that deadly hole and risk their lives?Noways, they got themselves in the, they must get themselves out, their families must help.
