Making Windows 98 Theme (old movie from 2007)
Created on April 6th, 2007
wanna see something different? this is a completely authentic screen recording of windows 98 right in the golden age of youtube, filled with all the classic traits of bad frame rate, notepad commentary, and some bland artwork to boot. it was originally supposed to be the first video kugee would have uploaded to the site, but it was recorded using the built in movie recorder in vmware workstation, which used a codec youtube’s uploader didn’t recognize at the time, and therefore rejected.
according to kugee, youtube’s uploader was also unreliable, and broadband was much slower at this time, so he ended up becoming a smosh wannabe and posted many of his early skits using quick capture. for that reason many of these videos are permanently lost
this video had no audio, so i added some background music. it’s a boring video, but many like it were just as much. not that many new videos are good either, but at least these oldies weren’t deliberate clickgrabs designed to waste 30 minutes for nothing. only about 4, lol. the original filename was called good day!.avi
i overlooked this the first time until i checked in those notes about how this could’ve been kugee’s first upload. it’s kind of a fascinating clip where he began a transition from making videos for himself to making them for the world. had this gone through, maybe he wouldn’t have been hanging in relative obscurity for 10 years, and could’ve become one of the more powerful players in youtube’s vintage computing collective early on. after all, a few months after this was recorded, he was obsessed with vintage macs for a while, and really really wanted to get one. it never happened because the conversations he heard about ebay convinced him that it was explicitly designed to be a scam, disregarding the fact it’s a platform of independent sellers of varying quality
if you’re wondering about that folder, it was nothing more than some random detail kugee left in the desktop as part of this bizarre style of humor he had
on November 14, 2023, Kugee’s website, Razorback, shut down, and hundreds of the best retro tech videos vanished with them. He sent me some nvme drives with raw footage and project files so I can preserve his videos in the best format possible. so this is effectively the official archive of Razorback (and kugee’s youtube channel)
