Illegal Mining | Govt. policy blamed for dwindling investment by mining industry
As the issue around illegal mining rages on in the country, one expert blames the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development policy, which he says, is responsible for the dwindling investment by the mining industry.
In South Africa there are over 6 100 abandoned mines.
These mines were left unrehabilitated as there were no legislative requirements for the rehabilitation of mines prior to the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act in 2002.
The local economy is losing billions of rands in sales, taxes and royalties as mines lay idle.
