Hmmm, can I now take my mini PC running Proxmox finally over to XCP-NG 8.3. … 8.2 wouldn't install on it.
Switched to proxmox, since their installer completely ignores my nvme drives on a Genoa system.
Was it easy to upgrade? Nope.
My experience: it's 10pm on a Friday.
I had the 8.3 iso ready, I used Ventoy usb.
Turn off the server, put the usb, boot the iso 8.3 and I get a warning that the version I was using was not possible to upgrade…
Strange my version was 8.2 but curiously it was not possible… if I continued it would delete all the vms (metadata) leaving a clean install.
Investigating apparently the 8.2 version is not compatible (let's call it 8.2.0) but to be able to update you need the 8.2.1 version.
OK I had ready the 8.2.1 iso that I had downloaded in 2022 so I updated it, what happened then?
It's 11pm on Friday , errors everywhere, luckily the installer backup left everything as it was before and the vms worked fine again.
Another googling later, apparently there is a hotfix version called 8.2.1-20231130 that fixes the bugs of the previous version…
OK I started to download the iso but for some reason the xcp-ng servers were slow and it downloaded at 1mbps.
I prepared a separate backup of the main disk of the server, finished it was 2am on Saturday.
It's 3am on Saturday. The iso finally finished downloading, I prepared the Ventoy and upgraded to version 8.2.1-20231130, everything was fine then the vms worked fine.
Finally I can start upgrading to version 8.3. The installer recognized my version correctly and gives me the option to upgrade.
Before continuing, it tells me that booting through BIOS, instead of UEFI, is deprecated and that if I continued using bios I would not be able to upgrade to future versions.
OK I rebooted the server and switched to UEFI to see if the programmers were kind enough to upgrade a BIOS version to a UEFI version… it was not the case…
OK I rebooted again and upgraded using BIOS and the future problems I'll see later…
It's 4am on Saturday. Finally finished upgrading to the latest version 8.3… I'm sleepy… I'm going to sleep…

XCP-NG should support KVM virtualization!
Upgraded to 8.3 after watching you do it on the livestream the other day. Went flawless. Been on XCPNG for a number of years in my homelab now and it does what I want it to (for the most part, but that's usually my fault when something doesn't work)
It would be great if the Terraform and Packer providers got some love, and some examples that work reliably with 8.3. I'm also looking for solid descriptions of how to deploy Flatcar Linux onto this platform.
I am more bullish on Proxmox. Run it at home for pfSense and a few VMs. Like how it uses the latest version of Debian along with the latest Linux kernel so hardware support is great.
XCP-ng still has a 2TB limit due to using decrepite VHD storage. This is a pain if you're dealing with large database VMs.
Still donβt support 2tb or more disks π
Tom usually takes a βwhat works best for youβ approach on these things and when he explains why a particular product works better for him over another, itβs often quite insightful. Would love to hear why XCP-NG works better for him than Proxmoxβ¦
Does it come with richful web UI out of box, like Proxmox?

can xcpng be put directly on th net with restricted access tot he management? i do this with hyper-v and i am trying to find another hypervisor to replace it.
Can it do incremental backup sync? It's a feature i use on Proxmox. VM backups are huge and i need to transfer them to a remote site regularly. Proxmox backup server does that great by sending only changes for each backup iteration.

Iβm excited for this, and the later addition of networking and VM creation. Iβve been looking for a replacement for ESXi 7.3 and this might do it.
Also Vates, if you guys offer a cheap subscription for us home users that just want to tinker and run like a dozen VMs I think that might be popular.
I just moved 10 hosts and about 600 VM's to XCP-ng from VMWARE at the company i work for. Everything has been great and support is amazing they really take the time to make sure you understand what you need to know about the problem and solution and get things resolved quickly. The transition has been smooth and we are actually very happy VMWARE made us look elsewhere! I am excited to see how it evolves now they have this inflow of customers and have been hiring so many new people
At work We are actually running multiple sites with Hyper-V fail over clusters for our servers and VDI win10 vms. but I am starting to concider moving away from Microsoft since they are not licensed yet and the cost is insane. My only concern is veeam support which seems to be still in beta.
Some cool improvements. Will the VM snapshot disk exclusion functionally with other attached devices? For example, I have a USB Zigbee controller that I can't attach to my VM because of the snapshots that are created as part of my nightly backup job. I must attach it to another machine and then use USB over ethernet. Will I be able to attach the Zigbee controller and then exclude it from the snapshots?

Question on vTPM. Does your host hardware have to have its own supported hardware TPM in order to host VMs with vTPMs?
XCP-ng UI Very ugly.π
I run my home lab on amd mini PCs from beelink. The main reason I ditched it was the windows vms were having issues with the network performance where i was getting extremely poor performance. Tried all sorts of guest tools with no luck. Then switched over to proxmox. Proxmox has worked well so far. I may try it again if the later version now supports these mini pcs..
