X99, still a USED Value KING in 2024?

Building an X99 Gaming PC with the i7-6950X, and RTX 3070 Ti in 2024 is definitely something special. However it’s even more special when you account for used bargains and then compare the mid-range RTX 3070 Ti on this platform vs the i9-13900K.

  1. Its better to get proper motherboard from MSI or Asus on ebay because these chips rely on OC a lot, the difference between what is shown and what can be achieved with good motherboard is ~30-40% increase. I don't see the point in buying x99 no more since you can buy entry level mobo for i3 or i5 13th gen and get higher results in games than a decade old hardware. I built my x99 system when there was only 8700k available and crappy 1800x which 5820k beaten the sh*t out of it when properply OC'd with all cores, cache, ram freq and timings tuned to its minimums. I upgraded to 10700k later on and did the same all around OC and there wasn't a huge difference between 5960x and that chip. My 5960x was so fast after all settings tuned it even beaten 3900x as far as I remember, i even did comparison videos, its only with 5000 series AMD was faster than almost a decade old cpu for 1k$ lol If anyone planning to go this route i can recommend few things : buy msi board , asus wasn't very good with x99 unless its rampage edition, try to get 3200 mhz ram cl14 – bdie used, doesn't matter, they come with life time warranty, x99 cpus have pretty fragile memory controller so running it full speed like i did at 3250mhz will probably degrade it, i ran at 1.28v which was considered safe but still degraded pretty quickly , could be because of all crazy prim95 tests i did etc, who knows but some other users said they replaced several 5960x as well due to failing imc quickly, broadwell-e is better in this regard.

  2. The market has probably died because of Windows 11. People are realizing that there is a possibility that their "new" gaming rig is going to be a virus fest in little over a year. There are work arounds but some people just cannot be bothered. They are probably looking to spend a little more and Go post 8th Gen which i believe is the cutoff for win 11 support. I love the x79 and x99 as a platform but their only safe future is on Linux.

  3. sold my gaming pc last month for some reason, had 6800k laying around for years and i just ordered asrock x99 extreme and XFX 6750xt refurbish all around 400 USD i guess that will do

  4. I just got a X99-E WS with a E5-2699v3 loaded into her (No RAM, storage, etc) for $100 CAD. Loaded it with 64GB Corsair LPX for $110CAD, and threw my RTX3060 in there. This thing has been being an absolute beast despite its age.

  5. I built an X99 build in 2016, 6850K with 2x EVGA 1080 FTW. Upgraded to a 1080TI when NVIDA killed SLI. Still running it. Probably going to upgrade before next year when Microsoft stops issuing security updates for windows 10.

  6. It's good. But I have to wonder, isn't it better to just get an I3 10100 for pennies? In fornite you will get 200+ fps most of the time, more mainstream, lower power consumption, better security, etc…

Who needs 10 cores to play games anyways.

  7. Still rocking my X99 Extreme CPU with 3090ti. This machine (Alienware Area 51 with 64gb of RAM) has been chugging for me since 2017. Itโ€™s a gaming beast and in Blender itโ€™s amazing.

  8. I just built a E5 2650 V2 Xeon on a X79 board. I put a rx 6500 Xt on it and am playing games. I put 32 gigs of memory for $20. I think I invested just over $250 for the whole thing plus a ssd and a new case. The cpu is an 8 core 16 thread. It's doing everything I wanted to do with it, youtube, videos, and some games like warthunder.

  9. Here B450 + 3600 is always best used deal, old Intels for some reason are crazy expensive especially on eBay, little bit less on local marketplace but still expensive.

  10. trying to get a Godlike x99 board sent in an offer on one that has Bios issues which is unfortunately very common in them (MSI tictoc death counter) planning on flashing reprogramming a new chip and soldering it on if not both bios chips (it has two you can switch between) any who here you can pick up a 14-core xeon and some 18core ones for under $40 used and even $30 used V4 of course… I was eyeing these boards but they just seem way to under whelming plus the Xeons run 135-145watts that and no usb 3.1 it's all just standard IO from early 2000's it feels like. it's awesome they are there, gives an option looking at an E5-2699 V4 E5-2698 V4 and a E5-2673 V4 there is a couple of them I am finding tempting just as a temp use because like said under $40 ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Did you try putting the ram in the right slots? You have the 4 sticks in the wrong ones to do quad channel memeory, plus different brands of ram it seems. I have an x99 godlike gaming it's picky about that just fyi.
