Why Are South Asians At a Higher Risk Of Metabolic Syndrome? #shorts

Firstly, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur simultaneously. They increase risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood sugar, blood pressure, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

There are two medical indicators to storing fat. The first one is your cells become bigger, which is called hypertrophy and the second reason is your fat cells replicate and multiply which is called hyperplasia.
Unfortunately, as South Asians our genetic fat cells tend to become hypertrophic and as they get bigger they cannot do their job. Whereas in non-South Asians they tend to multiply so there are more of them to do the same job.

Over time hypertrophic cells become insulin resistant, which leads to chronic inflammation – which is all the markers for metabolic syndrome.
What can we do about it? First step is to understand that there is a nuance and genetic approach to the interventions we are doing. It is the era of precision medicine and getting the correct diagnosis for you and your own body as each individual has different genetic factors.

Nutrition may suit some populations and not others. South Asians need to prioritize putting on more muscle because it will act as a sponge from all the metabolic damage from our fat to help repair the tissue damage. The best diet? Lower carbohydrates, higher protein and high fat is the key to South Asian genetic build.
