What Is a Virtual Machine? How Do I Deploy One?

What are Virtual Machines, and how do I deploy one? In today’s video, we deploy your very first Linux virtual machine and, as a “Bonus Jonas,” we also deploy a second Windows machine within VirtualBox. We discuss what virtualization is and the difference between hypervisors like VirtualBox. If you’ve never deployed a virtual machine before, don’t be nervous. We make this fun and easy! The great thing about a virtual machine is that if we mess up or need to redeploy, we don’t have to worry about breaking anything since it’s just that… virtualized!

We will deploy both virtual machines on VirtualBox, a Type 2 hypervisor. A Type 2 hypervisor is essentially a piece of software we install on our local machines that acts as the abstraction layer between our physical hardware, our own OS, and the virtual machines themselves. Deploying virtual machines is a great skill to learn, and you’ll find that if you’re familiar with deploying a virtual machine on one hypervisor such as VirtualBox, it’s not that much different on others such as ESXi or even cloud services like Google Cloud or Azure. So let’s dive in!
