What a great way to use an entire house project for a business tax write-off. Brilliant!
You must like to sleep hot. No way could i tolerate 72 to 75. I need it around 66 to 68 to sleep comfortably.
I don’t know if geo thermal is similar to a heat pump hvac but I have a heat pump that runs a separate set of wires and breaker to a backup heat source contained in my indoor unit. It will run if the outdoor unit ices over.
What CO2 sensors are you using? I'm referring to the ones shown from 4:05 to 4:07 in the video.
How much of this did your accountant take as a business deduction
I read these hermetic builds are killing the inhabitants because the toxic materials they are made with have nowhere to breath to… at my place we used compressed sawdust panels as outside insulation, what was used here?
But Matt !? Please include $/Kwhr when doing your Nat Gas to Electricity Comparison & factor in your Solar $ vs Grid $ VS Utility Nat Gas, yes it is Complicated but we need to know if what you are doing is actually Worth it ?? As always great Job & Fun to watch !
Okay .. I know for 100% sure I was subscribed to teh channel a very long time back, before the new home videos. No idea how that got turned off…
Stupid question. We just converted to an induction stove. What pots do you use for cooking? We are changing out 25 yr old pots to a new set that can work with the induction system. My wife is trying Heston. But there should be other brands that look nice and work..
I’m getting solar panels soon but the rest I wouldn’t waste time or money on. I really don’t want to control everything in my house from the internet.
I think this guy used more energy trying to monitor his energy usage, then the house actually used
I also have a Water Furnace Series 7 geothermal. The heat backup if the electric strip heaters installed for very high demands or as backup is the heat pump fails. In your symphony app it would be shown as Aux Heat. Also when Aux Heat is installed, the power for the control panel is rewired to that circuit (maybe the fan too? Not sure). So heat backup is the control panel for the geothermal, maybe the blower fan, and the auxiliary heater strips for high demands or emergencies.
Bensenwood builders are excellent builders.
Why did you decide to use a conventional water heater instead of tankless?
Are you sure you are using kilowatt hours correctly? Kilowatt seem more appropriate here and there
Why suggest a heat pump no matter what? When in your water heater video you admitted you speed more on energy over the previous gas water heater.
You admitted gas is that much cheaper than electricity.
Your energy use on your previous water heater would have been significantly lower if was a fair consistent comparison with a preheater.
Thank you for this video. I did not know there were so many opportunities to save energy in the home.
You can cut your dryer expenses by using a drying rack in the most dehumidified area of the house. Usually, you don’t need clothes right now, therefore you can fix humidity levels and dry close with no expense except time. I live in one bedroom flat in Eastern Europe and in winter this trick helps me a lot.
Love the videos thanks for sharing. Looked at putting up solar at my home, but just could not afford the upfront cost. I live in NYS so all my money goes to property taxes and supporting failed schools and big government. lol
Upgraded our hot water heater recently to a heat pump heater and we love it. Our electric bill is down and as a bonus we get a little extra cold air blowing into one of our hallways.
I had to argue and special order to even get a 22 seer mini split air conditioning unit, let alone trying to get any modern building system approved. I live in the desert, in a third world country, work in the US and still can’t afford to even move. This economy is nuts, the struggle is starting to become unbearable and the government shutdowns during COVID destroyed us financially. I have watched your journey for years and it has been amazing. You have an absolutely beautiful home. Hopefully one day we can do the same.
You were right. I thought I was subscribed. Turns out I wasn’t. I am now though 👍🏼
I don't understand, did achieve net zero after the removal of the network rack and the EV charging?
Heat back up is most likely your back up electric heat strips in your air handler. I would assume they kick on when your geo thermal system cant provide the desired heat temperature. Heat pumps use these as well. Heating you house to 72 is pretty crazy… Try lowering your deaired tdmp to 68 or 70 and you might eliminate that 5% of energy usage.
as soon. AS SOON as you shown off those unifi switches. i new POE. making for the fact of 30 to 60 watts a device and showing off cameras…… not surprising. it also runs your data in our house. wired and wifi. agan MORE POE. i mean I could see that go up another 3% in coming years
sitting here with my boiler system set at 67 lol I like it cooooolllll
great vid sir 🙂 Thank you!
This video is so full of errors and bad information I had to stop. Slab on grade fully insulated, sip panels, shape of the house should be square, flat invented roof r60 min, double ceiling every thing inside the thermal envelope.
This house wouldn't have met the first addition of the I codes.
QUICK REMINDER: If you have a mud room, close the door when you use your dryer. Air will come in from the exhaust fan, when not running, instead of the whole house.
I see you use Tesla energy. I do love that, because I have been 100% invested in $TSLA for years. That said, I wonder what led you to choose them. For myself, I really love the EG4 18kpv inverter with their Power Pro wall-mount batteries. The bang for buck can’t be beat, and the feature-set is amazing. I just can’t see paying the premium for Tesla being worth it. I’m just curious what drove you to that decision.
Rich dude copes for 18 minutes
What is the mysterious 50% left side of your energy use?
I am curious about the induction top surface. We had a glass-top electric for a while, and the surface was extremely difficult to keep clean and it tended to etch. Are the induction surfaces better in that respect?
The only issue I have been skeptical about is the initial cost of these high efficiency appliances and will they last a long time without breaking and needing to be replaced? Replacing a standard hot water heater vs the new system is crazy. Only time will tell.
First, congrats. 😁 You don't sound "undecided" about heat pumps vs gas. 😁 I have to challenge "it's not a matter of whether they're cheaper…but how much". True in some climates, but in North Dakota, most of our heating energy is needed when its below zero. Propane here is $1.30/gallon, and electric is $.104/kwh, and our furnace is 95% efficient. Straight unit conversion shows a heat pump would need a COP of 2, and even those with a high SEER2 do not come close for the majority of our usage, that is, below 0. Someone could use a heat pump in the spring and fall but would have to be diligent about switching. We need air conditioning too, so many people are getting the heat pumps almost for free on the AC equipment, but I doubt many people know when to switch and remember to.
Thank you.
We looked at building an "R2000" (then super energy efficient) home in the 80's and was advised by a friend to be very careful what we brought into the house as the chemicals from the construction materials such as carpet, paint, flooring, cupboards, insulation etc. would be gassing off for years, and that an air tight house with limited fresh air from an air to air heat exchanger could be an unheathly environment with a steady low level of toxins (primarily petroleum based). And then you look at cleaning chemicals.
So maybe check more that CO2 levels.
Too expensive with too many complex systems to achieve the result for the average home owner. Let's just make our grid more efficient and produce more nuclear power.
The back-up heat on your heat pump is most likely the electric heat that runs for defrost or extreme cold. It's the biggest energy difference between a heat pump and straight cool AC system. An air handler can be on a 20 amp 240v breaker except for the heat kit, which requires a 30-60 amp breaker depending on the size
