Thanksgiving Tech Troubles: Rebuilding a Home Lab
Last night, I shared a video expressing gratitude for Microcenter’s Thanksgiving Eve hours. However, I apologize for the out-of-order content. I’ll soon be uploading a video detailing my home lab rebuild.
The initial phase of this rebuild has been quite challenging. Migrating a SuperMicro server from TrueNAS to Proxmox has presented numerous hurdles. Here are a couple of significant issues I encountered and their respective solutions:
Issue 1: Video Output During Proxmox Installation
During the Proxmox installation, I observed unusually high refresh rates, a behavior I hadn’t seen in years with Linux distributions.
Solution:
I installed a low-profile NVIDIA R720 with 2GB of VRAM. This resolved the installation issue.
Issue 2: SSD Boot Compatibility
The server’s BIOS was quite restrictive, only allowing booting from RAID cards or USB drives. Previously, it was running TrueNAS off a Microcenter 128GB 3.1 flash drive.
To address this, I purchased a Gigastone 512GB flash drive. However, I encountered strange ELF errors, a problem I haven’t seen in a long time.
Solution:
I opted to install an SSD directly to the motherboard’s SATA port. This configuration allowed me to successfully boot Proxmox.
I’ve been grappling with these server issues since Monday, but I’m glad to have made progress.
