Why not try run the Mac version of office instead?
You have done great interviews so it could be interesting to do an interview with Wine/Proton developer(s).
The annoyance of creating lots of accounts via e-mail could have been a plug for one of your sponsors Proton Mail with their option to make new emails just to avoid using your main e-mail for stuff like account creation.
Funny how, with some of these apps, I've had more luck trying to run "the other version". Maybe it's because they just bypass the installers completely
Wine is extremly user unfriendly to configure. I will not use it until this changes. Winetricks or WINEGui is for me both not well implemented. I use Proton, because I dont have to care about configuration there. I love linux, but wine just frustrates me. Beginning from idiotic error messages, to dead links for downloading addons (in winetricks), …
Wish Onlyoffice had a "Outlook" like client.
Emulation will never be the real thing. I don't want a downgrade when swapping out a perfectly functional OS. That said, there are merits for Linux. I assume it's a much faster system because they didn't bloat it up like Windows. You have incredible control, provided you know how to use the console. Linux is like if it's stuck in an alternate timeline where graphical user interfaces never fully evolved and you're still using command prompts to get things done. Love the ASCII progress bars, very retro. But it's intimidating for someone who's used to automation.
Just think of emulation like a blow up doll. It replicates a real thing but it's far from the real experience.
I wish I could run my display (4k 120hz on a 6900XT) fully on linux, F U HDMI forum!!!!
Linux is just an a useless OS. Unless you use it for browsing the internet nothing more than that.
Yes please plan the interview, this will erupt a new wave of interest in opensource.
Better use windows and debloat it.
Vendors must bring their software to Linux.
Office 365 can also be accessed by web, it works ok for me but i just use LibreOffice whenever i need to
History repeats itself. So if people stubbornly stick to these exact programs, and demand that they get supported officially on Linux.. the companies that make these programs will demand (or "contribute") that Linux itself integrates some form of controlled authentication that they can use (aka exploit). Then it will be downhill from there.
The real "solution" is, people in general should re-evaluate their everyday life and whether they truly absolutely do need to be bound to these exact programs to continue living and happy.
I have never been able to get anything to work for more than a day with Wine. Basically my experience has been the same as yours.
Linux is Zombie software. It looks like it’s great until you get close to it and see how sick it is.
It's probably been about 10 years since I had to do this, but I remember having a full Windows install (ntfs partitions and all) dual-booted on my Linux box, and configuring Wine to point to the installed apps in that filesystem. It worked much better than trying to run the installers under Linux. When I needed to run updates, I'd boot briefly into Windows, perform the update, then happily go back to running most of the software I needed under Linux. I don't know if this approach still works in the 64 bit world.
Hey, Nick. The CoreMessaging_dll is in WindowsSystem32 — while WinRTSupport_dll appears to be in the Adobe PS directory. I don't have Adobe PS. I'm currently looking at my Windows 10 system partition, from KDE's Dolphin.
To me, you sounded like you misunderstood which files are missing. In the errors, they come before the text "(which is needed by…)"; e.g. import_dll Library <missing dll>.
Those application/suites all use system-level shared libraries. Y'know… the kind which are dynamically linked. What's the acronym for those? 🙂
In Windows, dll files are registered (and unregistered) using regsvr32_exe (/u). You may want to read about regsvr32 on Microsoft Learn.
How did you imagine copying only the application directory (and its subdirectories) would work? Who told you that? Either they made it up, or they left out many, many steps.
Even in Windows, you can't (simply) move an application's directory (and its subdirectories) to a new parent (directory) and expect it to work. First, you must unregister all of its dll. Then you can move it to a new parent, where you must register all of its dll and change all of its registry entries (to use the new paths). You might spend hours doing it manually. Unless you are moving it to a new partition with identical paths; i.e. the only thing you need to change is the drive letter in each path—from C: to D: (or whatever). Then you might speed it up with a Find/Replace. But… don't mess that up.
Put simply… it is so much simpler to uninstall the app/suite from Windows—then install it (again) to the new parent. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
If you don’t require a gpu all programs will run better and easier with a vm. GPU pass throughout can be also done but two gpus are required and the skill required increases also
I have Autocad R14 running with Wine, sort of. This version of Autocad was released in Windows 98 days and it installed on Linux with no issues. There are a few functions that don't work, although it's possible to create and edit drawings. I use it mostly to export DXF files for native Linux programs to ingest.
And then all these geniuses on yt make these videos windows is crap switch to linux. Give me a break, I use office and autocad for work and need those!
Dude… where were you with this video 3 months ago?
I was trying to install photoshop, premier pro, visual studio, topaz, fl studio (the only one that works well on wine) and other programs that I use a lot and very actively searched guides and github/internet pages checking every way and fix for every error, I could just watch your video and go to bed…
If only Microsoft would open source Windows. But then what horrors might we find in the code?
Comparatively Wine has gotten worse last 5 to 10 years. I sometimes wonder if the developers are trying to get the most popular working on Wine. When it comes to apps, I think the best one can do is to build features that are needed into distributions and the apps that runs on Linux. One of the best examples are Inkscape that is building ways to handle Affinity Designer files, modern color handling and a lot of features seen in payed apps. I think feature and file compatibility is more important than specific software. Then maybe ease of use and working in a familiar way.
There are still no decent media players on Linux either.
And no VLC is not it, don't get me wrong, it's great in that "it just runs", but the issue is that "it just runs" and there's nothing more to it.
🥴
Winnaps ?
!!! MICROSOFT WILL ALWAYS IMPEDE THE DEVEOPMENT OF LINUX SOFTWARE TO RUN ON THEIR PRODUCTS!!!
If You Can Happily Run Microsoft Office On Linux, Most Would Not Bother To Buy Their SPYWARE OPERATING SYSTEMS!!!
This "Spyware" Is Why Most Of My Private Communications Are On Linux!!!
For The Past Ten Years I Have Been Using Two Operating Systems! Windows 10 and Ubuntu Operating Systems, Each On It's Own Drive! With Ubuntu Fully Encrypted LUKS.
PS.
Has Anyone Tried Using A Version Of Proton To Run Office?!!
So in other words, I am still stuck with Windows.
We need more apps/games written/ported to Linux.
Why not try Lutris? It has scripts for apps too, not just games. I use "Subtitle edit" through Lutris.
Thumbs up for the interview!
The only options for office suite would be Web app, Windows VM, or native Linux alternative (OnlyOffice, LibreOffice). If running the actual office suite directly within your OS was that important, I don't see the point in considering Linux in the first place. Just use Windows and call it a day; however, those work-arounds I mentioned are good enough for at least 95% of all desktop users. You'd have to be one hell of a power user if you'd absolutely need MS Office locally installed natively on your machine.
Its been 30 years and Inkscape still has no CMYK profile 😂
I've tried the same route and achieved nothing, but like you I don't need Windows apps. Just did it to see if it was possible. Happy with Linux equivalents.
