The Silent Hill 2 Remake feels impossible

Gasp! A positive review of a modern remake! Against all odds, Silent Hill 2 Remake is an incredible modern retelling of a classic.

  1. Game is amazing. Luke Roberts played James phenomenally. Akira proves yet again what a genius he is at making music. A couple of Maria’s scenes fell flat for me and what sucks were that they were the two important scenes. But it was always gonna be near impossible to top the original ones. Angela is just insane lol

  2. I breeze through all the puzzles and combat sections. I played with no UI and just from taking in and sucking up the environment and walking and really enjoying the game. My first play through was 75 hours.

  3. I mostly don't like the new designs because they change what the designs are communicating, and thus their relation to ideas and themes the game is convey is affected. In original SH2 Angela's face had a sharper design, she looked mature and because of her looks the rest of her behaviour came across as confusing and raised questions, creating a mystery. It made her feel as hazy as everything else and that haziness only begun to clear up when you got more answers. And once you did get more answers now all of those aspects of her design become more recognizable and you can start questioning again how much of what we see is James projecting his own thoughts into his surroundings. New design meanwhile hard focuses on making her backstory more prominent, making it clear and being accurate to it, which in turn harms the sense of confusion, mystery, the ambiguity of what was going on. And due to her changed looks the question of James possibly projecting his thoughts into those around him is way less there. The whole topic of possibly finding her attractive and then being horrified by having ever felt that way once you know her backstory is no longer there. Eddie's design as well feels like it fixates heavily on one aspect of him and not the rest, once again ambiguity about how anyone might view him is pretty much gone. The designs make the topics obvious in an annoying way, like the narrative wants to spell out things which is something any story aiming at an adult audience should try to avoid for the most part. A condescending voice in a narrative rarely works, least so in a work that is meant to be aimed at an audience that is expected to capable of thinking like adults. One of the main reasons The Last of Us 2 didn't work for me at all, but I digress.
Maria's design is toned down, which is just weird. Her face too looks off, but all of the designs did during the early trailers, so maybe they only managed to improve some of them before release. Laura's fine since there wasn't that much going on with her design in the original game either. James still looks off to me, but I guess it works. Does look way better than in the first trailers at least.

  4. Blooper did a fantastic job , i was pleasantly surprised.. It's it better than the original?

Uhhhh…. Let's just enjoy the remake folks..

Ok that's not fair , is it better? Personally? No.

Is it a worthy remake? Yes..

  5. Hi ! Great video, pal! Loved it! I'm a HUUUDGE fan of Silent Hill 2 from 2001 and I COMPLETELY agree with you ! SH2 Remake Is equally good, regarding the original ! As a game, objectively, it's even better. And I'm sorry, as much as I love the original actors, Luke Roberts and the whole remake gang did a GREAT job, and, except the letter reading, EVERYTHING Is better. I love the original dub when I play SH2, and I love the New one in the remake. It's a better game to play, but I Will Always find that the original Is better because of what it brought in 2001, 2024 IS "just" a remake, but a great one !
    Have a good day

  6. They pulled nothing off 😂😂 they took SH and turned it into a worse version of RE2Remake. Proving the fact that most Remakes do not understand what made the originals special. It’s weak. That’ll be $70 plush tip for a bloated remake.

  7. As a person who fights against myself to be part of the "old guard" as you call them/us, I greatly, greatly appreciate these takes so, so god damn much. Thank you for speaking out against the bullshit in the fanbase and for celebrating the great things about this remake and for celebrating new fans. We need to WELCOME these kids to the art of such a great story, game and well done remake… not fucking gatekeep for the sake of gatekeeping. What fucking good does that do? I appreciate how frank and candid you are in this, while also pointing out the short comings without being like these dweebs that want to nit and cherry pick some short comings of the remake and acting as if these picks are the end of the world and a terrible remake and oh man they act like its quasi-proof of the death of gaming or some bullshit… The ironic part is this is such a breath of fresh air in the modern gaming landscape. I really enjoyed this and also appreciate it. I agree with about 95 percent of it and rather see this up on the algorithm than some nerd going on for 4 hours about how this is a demake because they didnt sexualize their god damn waifu of maria enough in this game as if these dweebs aren't just going to download mods to sexualize maria or even fucking worse…… angela… more. gross.
thanks for the hot takes, much appreciated. Subbed and liked.
    Thank u brutha

  8. My fear with the outfit change was that it could have been a "warning" or a foreshadowing that there were other changes. When I saw it wasn't a canary in a coalmine, I was instantly fine with it. There's nothing wrong; I almost think with the "memories" added into the game that it might play into a certain game theory (… que a famous song about dancing from the Rocky Horror Picture Show)

  9. As a diehard Silent Hill (especially 2) fan since the first one came out,I can nothing more say than "100% nailed it" – great video, very appreciated👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

  10. Silent Hill 2 (original) set a very high bar with psychological horror. The remake had a super lofty task to achieve even half the achievement of the original. I was absolutely floored by the remake. Bloober Team silenced everyone. Also, as always this was a fantastic video.

  11. I've been dragging out my playthough so my fiance can watch me play it after our son goes to sleep at night, and honestly I feel 12 years old again. It is truly the best horror game I've ever played until this point ( the resident evil 2 remake is just as good)

    Also you crushed this video.

  12. The abstract daddy fight is my favorite boss fight in all games I’ve ever played. The amount of terror I felt was insane. My wife and son both came in my game room because I was screaming. That shit terrified me

  13. Excellent review and analysis. Much appreciated.

PS I'm the only one probably who's ok with the new Angela model, looks real (as in looks like a person you might know or meet in real life, not like someone from a videogame) and this is crucial for her character I think, much more important than any other superficial consideration about what I might or might not like about her looks. In my opinion, her attractiveness (or lack thereof) really doesn't matter to her story arc and might even distract from it tbh. And one thing I must add is that her new voice actor is amazing, so much better than in the original. Same goes for James. I know a lot of people are very nostalgic and quite defensive about the voice acting in the original, but I have to say after listening to both VOs back to back numerous times, they are not even close, the original sounds unintentionally and almost bizarrely funny in comparison, Angela and James specifically. Yeah, I never bought into the idea that the original voice acting was deliberately done that way. Well, partly perhaps (as a bıt of a Lynchean touch), but not to the extent how it was bad really. For example, there are some lines in the original that always made me chuckle, like James's "Eddie? Eddie?" after he just killed Eddie. And yes, that goes for "LO-O-O-ST???" from Angela also. I'm sorry, it's hilariously bad and awkward acting, no matter how you slice it.

PPS Looks aside, I love that they gave Eddie ice-cream to chew on instead of pizza which he ate in the original game. The reason I love this change is because now every time you meet Eddie in the game it's always something icy or cold nearby or directly about him. Think about it: First time we see him, there is a dead body with what's left of it's head in the fridge in the same room, then we meet him in the theater and he eats ice-cream and there is steam from his mouth, like it's very cold there. Then we meet him at the beginning of the prison segment and there is a dead guy with frozen icy bloody head on the table. And then the last encounter (fatal for Eddie) happens in the meat refrigerator among the dead guys he killed, who are also frozen. In addition to that Eddie always sweating and it seems like it's always hot to him no matter how cold it really is, so ice-cream is quite appropriate addition to him.

  14. Looking forward to playing this after I finish Metaphor. Lots of nonsense coming from grifters trying to stir up shit about new games nowadays. Beautiful works of art are still being made.
