Mining

The National Coal Mining Museum

Find out about the story of coal and how it changed our nation forever. Unearth the stories of life as a coal miner and what it was like to live in a mining community.

Every tour ‘darn pit’ is led by an ex-miner with loads of experience under his somewhat heavy tool belt. He’ll unhand you of your ‘contraband’ and take you 140m underground through 180 years of mining, explaining why he has every right to tell you to ‘shut tha’ trap’. When you are ‘done and dusted’ you will be free to explore life above ground.

In the galleries you will see the evolution of mining tools and machinery over centuries. Learn about Sir Humphry Davy’s lamp and how over 200 years later his principles are still used.

Investigate the mechanical workings of the pit through interactive models, touch screen displays, and the giant machinery used to keep everything moving. Strike up a conversation with our blacksmiths as they restore metalwork and create art you can buy. Then relax and reflect in the Miners’ Memorial Garden.

Listen to the babbling stream and the birds sing as you walk through the woodlands and reed beds that help transform bright orange mine water into clean river water. Step inside our brand new Pony Discovery Centre to meet
our three ponies and horse. Chat to the experienced horsekeepers and try our interactive activities to discover how the stories of horses and ponies have been entwined with coal mining for many centuries. Then let off steam in the Adventure Playground.

Tuck into a great selection of freshly made hot and cold food or snap open your own picnic in one of our indoor or outdoor picnic areas. Then make sure your visit remains unforgettable with a great selection of affordable mementoes.
