Talking Circle – Stories and Gender-Based Violence: Righting Relations Canada

In the context of Sexualized and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), stories have always been at the core of our activism. SGBV has long been denied, repressed, and ignored, especially for Indigenous, racialized, queer, trans and disabled folks. This silencing not only hides the reality of SGBV, it compounds the trauma for those who survive and seek to heal. Increasingly, tongues are loosening, and the stories of thousands of victims and survivors resonate around the world.
As stories spread, we are called to reflect on the power and impact of storytelling when it comes to community healing. Cultures around the world hold stories as the heart of knowledge keeping and knowledge sharing; sometimes there are stories with teachings, and sometimes the stories themselves are teachings. In this talking circle-style panel, Righting Relations members from across Turtle Island will reflect on what we can and have learned from stories, and how and why stories are a crucial part of challenging and healing rape culture. They will discuss the ways we seek to find solutions and inspire social change through stories – both our individual stories, and the traditional stories of our cultures – and how we in our communities can hold, amplify, and empower those stories in a good way.
