South Africa illegal mining standoff: Hundreds remain underground in disused gold mine

A standoff between hundreds of illegal miners in a disused goldmine and police at the shaft’s entrance continues in South Africa’s North West Province. Volunteers have made little progress in bringing miners to the surface. The government says it’s now planning a professional rescue operation.
