Skipray 2.0: The Dreaded Imperial Blastboat (fan lore)

The Skipray Blastboat is a fan-favorite ship from the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. Today, I’ll be exploring my fan-made ship: …

  1. What would be it's closest Rebel equivalent? The B-Wing, cause you could argue the B-Wing has the firepower of a gunboat in the spaceframe of a heavy fighter. Although you could also say another Imperial equivalent to the B-Wing could be the TIE Defender or even the Missile Boat.

  2. Absolutely love this!

The GAT-12 is one of my all time favorite designs, and this is absolutely a worthy successor, able to outfight anything it can't outrun. Appreciate the surrounding lore you provide as well!

This would also make an absolutely ideal ship for a bounty hunter…either stolen, scavenged, or even gifted from the Empire and modified for a lone pilot with increased automation. The combat drones would also dovetail naturally with this case, maybe with the hunter modifying them to use a variety of non-lethal weaponry.

  3. I really, really, am impressed by the quality of this. It shows levels of skill and dedication that the Star Wars universe deserves.

As for the ship…. Why the heck does the rear section rotate to a vertical aspect in combat? What justifies the extra structural and mechanical systems required on a ship that’s hull is already desperately overstuffed for its internal volume? Admittedly we’ve already seen something vaguely similar on the Rebel X-Wing and B-Wing fighters. Is it just a stab at The Rule of Cool on the Blast Boat? Because to me both the Clone Wars and Imperial variants go from aggressive to derpy when that section rotates from β€œwing” to β€œtail”.

And I 100% agree with an earlier poster who loved the F-111 style crew ejection pod. It may be a departure from the Imperial standard of treating the pilots as being as expendable as the fighter itself, but it looks so very cool.

  4. what is that awesome Y shaped cargo craft at 7:37? I want to hear more about that next! always a good video with tons of awesome ship design work and actual thought tied in to the designs as a practical vehicle!

  5. I'm not sure that I really care for the addition of combat drones, but an overgunned customs vessel with a crew too small to actually perform boarding actions is very on-brand for the Empire. Designed with a "shoot first, don't ask questions later" mentality.

  6. I wonder what an Imperial X-Wing would look like.. Would it have more TIE Fighter aesthetics or fall more in line with the more aggressive angular Imperial designs? Making it more blocky and brutish..

  7. I love this design overall, makes sense and couldn't just fit right into the universe, but feels like it should've always been there. Also interesting that it kind of reverses the Rebel-Imperial fighter dynamic, in that it's a super-heavy fighter designed to kill anything from light freighters to corvettes, but with fairly few weapons and all forward-firing would probably be fairly vulnerable to a flight or two of A-wings or X-wings. Which makes another good reason it wouldn't find much use in the Imperial battle fleet; the hyperdrive isn't very useful if you need an escort of TIE fighters to cover your six.

  8. What's going on with trials on the island moon? I wasn't financially able to support the project at the time of its kickstarter campaign. But I am now, and am curious how the progress is going on and where I can track it.

  9. Have a dorsal turret with a 360 degree arc of fire and block it with a rotating weapon wing. Response put the turret on the nose with about a 70 degree arc and keep the pointless rotation. Could've stopped the rotation, placed another turret below for 2 360 degree arc firing solutions that could also fire in the 3rd dimension up or down. This whole concept with the rotation turns a gunboat into a heavy fighter relying on maneauverability

  10. Your 3d modelling and renders are just so fucking sick. I'm sure you get this all the time but I wish you could be involved in an official Star Wars project. I'm so hype for Trial of the Island Moon.

  11. This is one of my favorite SW ships of all time. I used it all the time in the games and wish it got more love. It's my character's ship of choice in my own SW head cannon. =) I love your new design and I am going to try to replicate it in Space Engineers. Although, I have not successfully built an original blast boat in the game yet. My building skills still need some work. However your design seems like it would be easier to make in SE given SE's limitations with how their blocks work.

  12. Wonderful! Considering the Rebelion's penchant for modification of Empiral vessels, how would they modify such a ship? Less firepower in favor of more speed? Or possibly a makeshift medical vessel, like a medical helicopter. A well-armored medical helicopter with a powerful ion canon instead of a turbo laser?

  13. It never ceases to amaze me just how close you get to the classic Star Wars audiovisual language. The video sequences just have the right pacing, the right visual effects, camera angles, and those classic sounds.

  14. I first read about the Skipray in the Star Wars Imperial Sourcebook. It is a torpedo and fast patrol boat. Not well suited for customs but great for local defence and supporting a fleet. It's almost the perfect small craft for the Rebels to beef up their starfighters, although it fills a similar role as the B-Wing.

In one SW tabletop rpg our group was part of a New Republic anti-piracy/anti-slavery task force. Two Skiprays were paired with an Assault Shuttle. The shuttle, which had great front shields and strong tractor beams, would go straight in and grab a pirate vessel or slave transport. It would then start dragging it away or immobilise it. It would absorb hits with its strong forward shields while pummeling the target with ion cannons to take everything offline (in the rpg ion cannons cause electrical disruption and not much damage). Then the Skiprays would make high speed gun and torpedo passes at the target ship while it was still grabbed by the assault shuttle, or held off other enemy vessels. When the ship was ready to be boarded NR naval infantry in the assault shuttle did it. (Adapted from the game "Star Fleet Battles" and known as the "Gorn Anchor" or "Klingon Anchor")

  15. BTW, THAT SKIPRAY would be a perfect bounty hunter ship for Mando. Especially, if he gets a partner or two among the other mandalorians. Can immagine the scene, boat dives into atmo, slides though the fire and evens its course into a flight-level. Mando and one of his partners jumps out on jumppacks, to make unexptected visit to locals hiding down there. Third partner is staying onboard, to provide "artilery" support (or act as escape vehicle) when needed. After combat and besting some unexpected ace in the sleeve, the bounty pulls out, team wins, grabs the bounty, fires their jumpjets and rockets away from pursuing underlings of capured bounty. Randez-vous in the coulds with boat, bounty thrown into a bunkbead with caged "door" and than flight to the authorities, to loose the looser.

Would LOVE to see another season of Mandalorian, but under those circumstances:
    1) KKK (known as Kathleen Kenedy) has to be as far from ANY starwars, as possible. Preferably on differnt planet, and does not give a toss, if she has enough of air to survive christmass there.
    2) Fawreau, and possibly Filoni, if his job is mainly to bring coffe to Fawreau. Filoni gets tops advisors voice to Fawreaus decisive voice.
    3) Take back few supporting characters, but make a story about DIFFERENT mandalorian. Din Djarins story was (in main parts) uncovered to us, and SURELY no-one gives a toss about the mando-queen. She is a good RECURRING character – maybe should be used even as a "boss" or giwer of work to mando, but no-one is interested in her quest for the big pink butterknife. Especially after she destroyed it in the combat.
