SIOV R2 Next gen I O Virtualization Framework for Next gen Datacenters
“Utkarsh Kakaiya (Principal Engineer) – Intel

The modern datacenter is rapidly evolving in terms of capabilities (e.g. Networking- Storage- Compute- Artificial Intelligence)- scale (e.g. # of VMs/cores)- and composability (e.g. FaaS- containers). As such- the I/O virtualization mechanisms must evolve as well. In the OCP Server Project team- a workstream team was formed by several CPU- device- and OS vendors to define a next-gen I/O virtualization framework (known as Scalable I/O Virtualization Revision 2 – SIOV R2) for the datacenter ecosystem to address these needs. The key customer usages that SIOV R2 is primed to address include traditional virtual machines- confidential virtual machines- high-density containerization- nested virtualization- live migration- and partitioning of complex accelerators (e.g. GPUs).”
