Sim City 3000 under VMware Player (Part 2 1968-2000)

As with CivIII, I have to yet make another confession: I am a SimCity junkie as well. I was actually introduced to the series with SC2K. From there, I just played the crap out of this series, and still do. As with CIV, SC is one of those series where I go months and maybe a year without playing it, only to binge on it several hours a day for the next couple of weeks. Well, Sim City is the past. It’s City Skylines now, even though I haven’t tried the new version. I heard that game has series performance issues though, so I might hold off on that one for a bit. Anyway, back to SC.

SC3k was one of these games that I played constantly over the years. It’s a very solid sequel over SC2K. Granted, one will need a more powerful machine to run yet. However, the PC’s and virtualizers of today will have no issue running this title, which is good, as whatever city I’m going to make is going to get really huge. One could make bigger cities in SC3k as compared to SC2K. SC3k is another one of those games where you tell yourself “Just one more turn”, only to realize that you might have not met budget goals or a unexpected disaster occurred. However, in this game, I wanted to simulate the growth of a typical American city over the century.

Like with CivIII, this SC3k session was recorded this session before SoftGPU was released, Thus, I didn’t test the game on that setup. However, also like CivIII, SC3k doesn’t use GPU acceleration, there is no reason why this game shouldn’t run under a Win98+SoftGPU+VBox setup.

VMware Player 17 is virtualizing a x86 multimedia PC with a single core processor (AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core Host with each Core running at 4.2GHz), 3GB of RAM, and a VESA Compatible display with 3D Acceleration Enabled. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 32-bit color depth. The VM also has a HD audio device, and an AMD PCnet NIC. Windows XP SP3 is installed with the Plus!98 “Inside My Computer” theme that was copied over from a Windows 98 installation.
