The history of industrial revolutions is well documented and the industry kept updating itself every 50 to 70 years. The first one was in the mid-1700s, the second in late-1800s and the 3rd in the late 1960s. But during and after the 3rd industrial revolution and start of the PC era, the speed at which technology developed skyrocketed. The IT other related industries kept up with the changes, but the industrial sector was left behind. Industry 4.0 is an initiative started around 5 years ago in Germany and has gained momentum recently. This initiative is mainly focused on automating and hyper-automating the old industrial complex that has lacked behind in taking advantage of recent advances of technology. Virtualization of PLC is part of the Industry 4.0 transformation, where VMware playing a big part transforming the industries like it did the datacenters.
