Mining an asteroid is like using a diamond to build a sand castle. Not worth it #space #billionaire

  1. I think there is FAR greater motivation for asteroid (astronomical) mining than "a city of Mars".
Not to mention, effectively mining things in space may be the only thing that permits development or long-term travel…
…otherwise, you need to launch AN ENTIRE CITY off the earth, and currently every pound of material (including the water those astronauts need to drink for 4 years just to PASS BY mars) costs thousands of dollars ๐Ÿ’ธ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

(Or we could just chill here and fix the only planet the human race is ever likely to experience)

  2. considering that the gold could be used in electronics the only people who really have to worry about this is other billionaires and millionaires and I'm fine with their money becoming worthless

  3. Gold for its worth is not the real target for asteroid mining, but rather metals in general. There is a finite amount of minerals on Earth that can be mined and refined, and the long term demand for raw materials far outstrips what is available down here. Asteroid mining solves that problem, as even a moderately sized asteroid contains enough material to supply Terran industry for years.

  4. Realistically it will be elon who becomes the first trillionaire, the Arabs are supposedly trillionaires but since that's unconfirmed best bet is elon. Going to mars will be the next big thing to happen to our civilization, up there with the invention of nuclear weapons or the start of the industrial age. And at least for a few decades elon will be the sole stakeholder.

  5. But gold is such a cool material! It don't corrode, it's a decent conductor. It's my favorite color. If we made gold super cheap that could be awesome! Coat everything in gold! Make it last forever
