Mclaren W1 – This is it! (But I hope not)

On October 6th Mclaren will be revealing a new supercar that in their own words, is going to be a no compromises, generation defining vehicle that is the best looking, best sounding, best performing mclaren – ever. And until today, the public has not seen any actual images of the car. But this afternoon, Supercar blog published these 6 images, that I hope aren’t of the actual W1, but probably are.
The best information we have about this car comes from a group of mclaren dealers that were shown pictures of the W1 and shared highly detailed information about the car to automotive media outlets.

To determine the authenticity of these images we can compare them to the descriptions provided by the dealers who have seen official images of the car and see if these new images match their description.
According to reports, the W1 features roof hinged gullwing doors instead of McLaren’s standard dihedral doors. In this overhead image we do see panel gaps that suggest these could be gullwing doors but we don’t see any evidence hinged mechanisms on the roof, although they could be and probably are completely concealed. A roof mounted intake is also supposed to be present on the car, and in this image we can see what appears to be a very short intake.  There is also supposed to be an active diffuser and rear wing. In this image this does appear to be an active rear wing. Its hard to tell for sure if the splitter is active, but its quite likely that these two bars are either struts or adjustable arms that change the angle of the diffuser.
The Dealers also reported flying buttresses, and this image dose look to confirm that, and large intakes with active shutters, beneath the headlamps, which do not look to be present in these image, but there could be very small active shutters below the headlamps here. The W1 is also supposed to have and active splitter, and its quite possible that the splitter here is active, and floating genders are also supposed to be present, and I would think these could qualify as floating fenders.
We’ve got a couple computer generated images of the interior which is fairly unique when compared to the rest of mclarens lineup. The seats, rear mouldings and center console have been designed to look like one single component. The overall look is extremely simple, clean and modern, although I can’t say it looks impressive or exciting. The dash, steering wheel and instrument cluster look great, although I’m not sure how I feel about the snakeskin pattern. And that oddly shaped floating infotainment screen could could have been better incorporated into the interior

So from looking at these images, most of the elements described by the dealers appear to be present. But I hope these images are fake, because this is not the car that Mclaren promised us. I love the F1 inspired roofline, that’s the only part of the car that looks good. This vehicle looks like someone took pieces from a bunch of different cars and glued them together.  All of these gaping intakes look so misshapen and out of place and the car completely lacks any is visual harmony. The wheels are also an eyesore and do not belong on a 2.2 million dollar hypercar.
So there’s a good chance that these images are legitimate, but I’m holding out hope that they are not. We’ll know for sure on the 6th when mclaren offically reveals this car. Thanks for watching and for more automotive content that you cannot find anywhere else, click here to subscribe.
