"We turned our backs on a dwindling star… – A reference to the Dark Energy plot, for sure. Was the Milky Way already in trouble before the Reapers even arrived? By harvesting, were the Reapers trying to preserve advanced civilizations from an inevitable, galactic catastrophe caused by the use of mass effect fields? Did the use of the Crucible (a massive "mass effect" device also spread that decline to the Andromeda galaxy by causing the Scourge – or was it the geth telescope?
To me, this story had a lot of potential and my greatest worry is how the game's poor reception has derailed it. Often when studios change directions mid-story, we wind up with a "less cohesive" story for it. What I suspect is that we're going to be missing a game or two that would have occurred in Andromeda and set the return to the Milky Way, but are instead returning in the next game immediately to the Milky Way.
At any rate, I hope you enjoyed the game as much as I enjoyed watching you play it. It's been "The best." (my favorite line from ME3.
