Let's play a game. It's called "let's see how many people read the pinned comment before scrolling down to make their own".
We knew we had it, but it was a low priority because Optane's use-cases were few and far between and it faded from relevance shortly after our first video.
Intel didn't ask for it back because of the same reasons.
Also.. Please… This isn't hardware we bought, nor does it have any actual value. Engineering sample components – especially storage – gets shredded once they are sent back to to the manufacturer anyway. No starving kids were denied access to a 6TB RAM server.
The "we forgot" is just a fun hook for the video because I stubbed my toe on the box in the warehouse a little while ago and thought "hey, oh yeah this thing.. maybe it would be a good vehicle for a video on what the heck happened to Optane"
In a nutshell: Relax, guy.
Also at 2:41 we forgot a zero and should have said 50GB x 120 = 6TB
Linus
Don't worry it also happens to me
Just an idea, but would this sort of setup not be perfect for AI like LLM or inferencing where you're linking huge amounts of small bits of data in complex ways?
CrystalDiskMark without the waifus? tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk
5:14 ooof the way it ‘screamed’ once the RAM was taken out. I felt that in my soul
Thumbnail made me think Linus was gonna blow me up with his mind.
GPU with optane memory extension would have been a godsend for at home enthusiast AI applications
hey ugreen(and everyone selling or buying a nas), a nas doesn't have any justification to cost >200$ bare(ie no drives inside)
the hardware is basically IDENTICAL to a small pc these days(might be ARM but still not worth >200$ just for the cpu and board)
the chassis simply cannot cost more than 100$ at all ever
why is ANY bare nas >300$? why does it even get CLOSE to 300$?
a nas should cost what a cheap pc with a few hard drive bays costs, MAYBE 250$ bare
in fact the total cost of my octa-core 32gb ram server pc with 3 4tb drives in a true LSI hardware raid-5 is <1000$, and that is including my crappy rx550 because I felt no need to toss it and instead use a cheap display adapter
a nas should not need an octa-core ryzen 7 1700 and 32gb of ram and all the other crap to simply connect 3 drives in raid to the network, meaning a fully decked raid-5 raw 12tb 3 drive raid nas should cost 800$ MAX, and might be more like 300$ MAXIMUM without drives(drives are pretty dam expensive)
sorry but buying a pre-built nas is 100% a scam, they just are not worth the cost at all ever
=/ I remember having to buy over priced DDR4. Around 220USD for 16GB which for the time frame for trident Z 3600mhz was a "deal". I'm currently building a media PC out of old parts basically cleaning out the closet and it moot seeing the prices so low compared to that.
awe man thats server is so cool im gonna get a server rack and what not some day. i been saying that for 10+years on probably 90% of the things i wanna get lol hey i just got a ps4 lol.
I love that they’re going to do A/B thumbnail testing. Let’s see if the community as a whole puts their money where their mouth is, or if the community as a whole actually doesn’t care about the thumbnails and it’s just a few loud voices screaming over the crowd.
Now we know why you guys lost that Intel sponsorship. Haha, just kidding!
Cute, Just got them laying around.
You have all this cool tech that others would envy getting hands on, you intvested shitton into labs yet you don't even begin to scratch the surface with your quick benches. Watched this and EVGA SR-2 video. Almost zero research into where it could've been used, no comparisons with something new and relevant… Such missed opportunities all the time. I understand it's all about entertainment here but data could be entertaining too. Maybe it's still faster somewhere than contemporary systems? Maybe not. And if data and tests are not important in videos since they are pure entertainement then why the lab exists?
Ey, you cant Calculate! 50×12 =600gb not 6tb!
0:58 You know, your coat's kind of a brownish color…
10:19 and nothing further was ever mentioned about the thumbnail testing. Also wont tell you about the number of people who will always click your videos but FUCKING hate most of your thumbnails
5:20 it is in pain
Would love to know what 4K random read and write would be like on Octane.
You dont need to set up Optane DCPMM with the bios. Just use ipmctl together with ndctl
