1. Run Check Disk (CHKDSK) Utility
The CHKDSK utility scans your drive for errors and attempts to fix them.
Step 1: Press Windows + X and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
Step 2: In the terminal, type the following command:
chkdsk /f /r
This command will check for errors on the drive and attempt to fix them. The /f switch fixes errors on the disk, and the /r switch locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.
Step 3: You might be prompted to schedule the scan at the next restart. Press Y and restart your computer. The scan will run before Windows boots up.
2. Use Windows Error Checking Tool
Step 1: Open File Explorer and right-click on the drive showing the error.
Step 2: Click Properties and go to the Tools tab.
Step 3: Under the Error checking section, click Check.
Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions to scan and repair the drive.
3. Run the System File Checker (SFC)
System File Checker scans for corrupted system files and repairs them.
Step 1: Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Terminal (Admin).
Step 2: Type the following command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
Step 3: Wait for the scan to complete. It will fix any corrupted system files it finds.
4. Run DISM Tool
Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool (DISM) repairs the Windows image and can help resolve drive errors.
Step 1: Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).
Step 2: Run the following commands one after the other:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Step 3: Restart your computer once the commands are complete.
5. Check for Windows Updates
Sometimes drive errors are related to system issues that have been fixed in newer updates.
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates.
Step 3: Install any available updates and restart your computer.
