How to Add an Existing Virtual Hard Disk to an Encrypted VM in VMware Workstation

If you are using encryption for your VMware Workstation virtual machines to run Windows 11 or for other reasons, you might find that you are unable to attach an existing virtual hard disk to a VM and receive a message that says “The selected virtual disk is unencrypted and cannot be used with an encrypted virtual machine.”

If that’s the case, then you will need to make a couple of temporary changes to your virtual machine in order to attach the disk to start using it.
