Having to use Windows 11 for specific programs drives me crazy.

In this video, I’ll talk about how having to use Windows 11 for specific programs can be frustrating and drive you crazy. If you’re …

  1. What I've learned is that the majority of Microsoft Office who insists they cannot switch to an alternative such as WPSOffice or LibreOffice – and therefore can't switch to Linux – don't even use 1% of it's functionalities, I've come across Excel users who didn't know to replicate a formula by dragging down the cell, another who copied data from one spreadsheet to the other by copying and pasting each individual cell to the correct spot, and another who didn't even know how to use the autocorrect. I think the latter was used to an older office that was a bit different and got lost just by getting a new one and logically would not have much trouble switching to another suite. The resistance against linux nowadays it seems is way more based on ignorance rather than actual need.

  2. Like so many others i have to use windows at work. I hate every minute of it. It's become so incredibly intrusive with popups everywhere, apparently you don't click on what you intended to click because some stupid popup was silently taking its time to load.

  3. I'm trying to move to linux after copilot got installed on my machine, plus win10 only had 1 year left of support (unless you pay up to extend support). My issue is there is very limited support for nvidia and the only android emulator requires wayland, which runs bad on nvidia. So disappointing that linux still isn't easy to get into, after years of saying "gaming is almost there with linux, I'll switch over".

  4. My trajectory of computer was from Mac to Windows to Linux. Mac is the superior proprietary OS of the closed-source two, but it's licensing ties you to an ecosystem limited to overpriced and sorta crappy hardware. I switched to Windows because I got the bug to build my own towers, and Apple don't like you not just buying their overpriced junk.

I switched to Linux because Windows 10 and up is malware in and of itself. It takes away a proprietary level of control over your hardware to serve Microsoft's wishes in complete disregard to yours. That's malware.

Now it drives me crazy to have to use Ubuntu for one task using proprietary software only supported on Windows, Mac and Ubuntu specifically. So much so that I installed a second SSD, installed Ubuntu to it and nothing else but that one proprietary program. Then I configured my UEFI settings to boot my main Arch system and only boot the Ubuntu volume if I F-key up the boot menu.

  5. Windows 11 requires new hardware for security capability. Folks complain about Windows being insecure and when they implement security features that require new hardware everyone complains about that also. Microsoft chose to advance the security paradigm with Windows 11 in response to the threat landscape, which unfortunately requires new security capabilities from the hardware. You too can enjoy root kits if you dont use SecureBoot. SecureBoot requires TPM.

Microsoft also has a linux distro it's called CBL Mariner. Microsoft has a lightwight 10/11 version called IoT. Have you consider setting up a Windows VM for this task?

I would move to linux desktop but anti-cheats don't work on linux and waydriod doesnt support the games I want. It's easy enough to run a linux VM or SSH into a linux host do remote dev work or even use WSL2 for dev work.

  6. There must be a way round it so that you don't have to use Windows 11. I find that I am able to do everything on Linux. I don't have Windows on any of my computers. Windows 11 is the worst version of Windows ever. I would never use it as my OS and if I had to I would feel very bad. I used to like Windows when we had Windows 7 but that's end of life now. So we cannot use it anymore. Windows 10 is no better than Windows 11. Windows used to be good but Microsoft killed it with Windows 8. When they got rid of the start menu and many features we had in Windows XP and 7. Then it got worse from then on. I am glad I don't use Windows anymore. Switching to Linux was the best thing I ever did.

  7. I've been wanting to switch to Linux so badly for a long time but I can't because of few specific applications I can't live without and it makes me mad.

  8. I am currently using Tiny10 because I don't want all those Microsoft Processes running in the background.
The only chance I see for Linux becoming more commonly used would be Valve coming out with their SteamOS for any hardware besides the Steamdeck.

  9. I think you're mistaken about the marketing part.
I truly believe that what we're comparing, when we say Linux vs Windows or Mac, are the desktop environments which are GNOME and KDE mostly. Distros are just a fancy package manager, themed DE, and maybe additional features like atomic upgrades.

Gnome and KDE are massively underfunded, just lately (one year ago) GNOME got a $1 million award from the european sovereign fund and they just blasted through things that were late for decades, HDR, VRR, file picker thumbnails, DRM lease… $1m is an absolute joke compared to Microsoft's or Apple's budget for their equivalent division.
I think their prime imperative should be to secure proper reccuring revenue, offer cloud services for config syncup, keyring sync, flatpak backup… something.

As for macOS, I was a Windows guy for decades, went to mac (I still use a macbook air m which I think is absolute peak laptop hardware), and Linux on my desktop.
mac's are nice but are too segregating, they just play nice with other Apple things, and they go out of their way to make it hard for other actors to plug in, I hate that philosophy.

  10. I’m an Apple user and have been in the process of switching to Linux for a couple years now. The big sticking point is my wife and kids. They are locked in!

For me, Apple keeps adding things that I simply don’t want/need which eventually makes my hardware so obsolete, you have to upgrade (if for nothing else but an up-to-date browser experience!) And with this new AI push? It’s ridiculous! If I could daily drive Mac OS X Mavericks and an iPhone 5s with iOS 6 on it I would be happy as a clam. Linux on an old Mac is an option, but I’ve found it’s a sub-par experience; slow, crashes, driver issues (even following online guides!).

Linux on Apple Silocon is a much, much better experience then on older Intel Macs by a mile! The only wrinkle there is a lack of ARM based Linux apps. They are out there, but many of the apps that I’ve found I would like to use are simply not complied… and I’m not in a place where I can do that myself.

    I’ll get there someday though.

  11. My experience with Apple and Microsoft has convinced me that the former is a cult, while the latter is an evil corporation. Neither is suitable for my philosophy of life. I've moved to Linux on my computers and to a deGoogled Android for my phone. My one concession is keeping an old iPad because of an app that I need, but that won't run without being connected to either the Apple or Google system–the app is Readle, a language learning service, if anyone wants to shame them.

  12. What i did was cut down one of those ssd drives that you use. Inside the case you will find that its ONLY a tiny circuit board inside. So I cut it down and glued the case back together and then I mounted it INSIDE my mini pc and plugged it into the SATA bus. It is no doubt faster than yours cos it does not rely on USB, and its always there in GRUB, ready to select it to boot, if ever I need windows for that one task.

  13. When my daughter's SSD drive with Windows on it got toasted earlier this week, I gave her my Mint USB which temporarily filled 'almost' every niche that she needed. She put Windows on the new SSD, but wasn't unhappy with the Mint experience. If you don't mind me asking, what specific program(s) are you using in Windows that you're unable to use in Mint? Would a virtual drive help?

  14. Do you think Linux will become like Windows if it becomes more popular? What I mean is, will it have all that bloat, AI, etc? I sure hope not and I sure the GNU license stays pure.

If you are not using windows for security intensive stuff, ie banking etc.
There are unofficial mods of windows. One of my favorites is Windows X-Lite. However, I am like you and use it on a separate drive on a separate laptop to fiddle with.
