This is not the best way to experience the game. There is a lot of audio latency and lag spikes. But, if you want to try it yourself, you need to:
1. Download the game from bit dot ly slash arbyshasthemeats (“Guitar Hero Games/PC/Guitar_Hero_III+Patch_v1.31-HATRED” directory)
2. Mount the .iso file using “sudo mount” (can be read-only)
3. Launch “Setup.exe” with wine, and go through the setup process. Wait for the install process to finish (you may need to wait a couple of minutes at the “Copying new files” part)
4. When it’s done, try launching “Setup.exe” again – you should see an “Insert the disc” error.
5. Unzip the .7z file included in the directory you previously downloaded
6. Launch “GH3_1.31_Patch.exe” with wine, go through the patch setup
7. After that’s done, replace the “GH3.exe” in “~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Aspyr/Guitar Hero III/” with the one that is in the “HATRED” directory from the .7z archive
8. Launch “GH3.exe” with wine. It should work now!
9. If your guitar doesn’t work, you can try mapping it to a keyboard. I used AntiMicroX in the video. If you do that though, make sure to set the controller poll rate in AntiMicroX’s settings to a high value (16ms), or else you will get lots of lag spikes.
Remember that GH3 allows only one device to control the game – if you want to switch devices, you need to restart the game. (for example, if you skip the first cutscenes with a keyboard, your controller will not work)
I wonder if this would work on a Steam Deck. That would be pretty cool. Unfortunately I don’t have one so I can’t test if that’s the case.
