GPW2 | Grand Poo World 2 Any% Good Ending PB In 44:12 (WORLD RECORD!)

After finishing up the Storks retribution grind, we decided to come back to GPW2. GPW2 was one of the earlier grinds in my kaizo career, so I thought that my experiences since then would help provide better execution / strats. At the start of this grind, my sum of bests was 42:48, which we whittled down to about 42:35 just from better execution. Then came the science, which further reduced the sum of bests to 42:03.

However, a few days ago some people were hypothesizing how realistic a deathless run of GPW2 could be, which got me intrigued. Our sum of bests is extremely fast but there are a decent number of coin flips that I was taking throughout the run that drastically reduced the likelihood of deathless. For example, rock skip at the end of the 1st half of Caradhras or the 1 cycle sparkies at the start of Arrakis. As a result of that conversation I decided to start making some deathless attempts where I still went for a lot of the optimal strats but I strategically cut out some of the sketchy ones. The only exception is the 1st 2 levels where I attempted everything (unfortunately I don’t think I got the chance to perform platform skip in Laser Lifts on this run, but I have a surprisingly awesome setup for it; I got the ending 5/5 times the other day in real run attempts and I think I got it 1/1 or 2/2 times during this stream). The rule was that if I died anywhere before Sen’s Fortress then it was an automatic reset. After Sen’s, I was allowed to continue with a death but if I took a death then I would revert to hyper aggressive strats.

Strats that I was intentionally taking slow:
* No under fish + bullet spin kill at the end of the 1st half of Riptide Slide
* No rock skip at the end of the 1st half of Caradhras
* Intentional delay before grabbing the 1st rope of the 2nd half of Caradhras
* No 1 cycle sparky at the start of Arrakis
* No camera manip 1 cycle pokey at the start of the 2nd half of Arrakis
* 1 extra bounce on a particular pokey in the 2nd half of Arrakis
* No 1 cycle saw at the start of Sen’s Fortress
* No double 1 cycle saw in the middle of the 1st half of Sen’s Fortress
* No top right corner cluster chuck
* Grabbing the halfway of Deuce Lair secret exit (was having some trouble with 1 of the new strats but I didn’t want to not go for it)

Starts that I was planning to take slow had I been deathless:
* No 1 cycle mushroom rope bridge in Mirkwood before the 1st half
* No quick blue shell grab in Weathertop secret exit
* No early ball and chain spawn in room 1 of Hanzo Castle
* No triangle skip in room 1 of Hanzo Castle
* No early saw spawn in room 4 of Hanzo Castle
* No koopa net bounces after the halfway in Weathertop normal exit
* Possibly no fast ending cycle of the double wide boo ring before the note blocks before the fishing boo at the end of the 1st room of Weathertop normal exit
* No aggressive boo ring in the 2nd room of Weathertop normal exit
* No aggressive up + left toss of the final throw block in the 1st room of House of the Undying
* No aggressive cape through the middle of room 2 in The Eyrie (would have used the old school sticky fly)
* No aggressive free fall + disco shell in room 3 of The Eyrie
* No clock skip 1 in the 2nd half of Idle Hands
* No clock skip 2 in the 2nd half of Idle Hands
* No p speed before the halfway before the reznor door in Idle Hands
* No p speed to the right in the basement of The Thousand Halls
* No optimal eerie room in The Thousand Halls (use the other eerie room which is the 2nd fastest)
* No double key jump in the up triangle room in The Thousand Halls
* No offscreen ending in Escape

We still have the rest of this weekend to try to get deathless, but if we don’t then I’m still thrilled that we got this one before GPW3 released 🙂
