Gentoo Linux Install On Optiplex790 UEFI Mode From Boot To Xfce4 Desktop
Disclaimer: This process work(s) for me however I can say that my settings will probably not be your settings. Starting with the CPU, GPU & system defaults will/may all vary. I do show a couple of tools that will help you adjusting your install configurations.
The settings may vary wildly or hardly at all. Most of my PC installs have their own configs especially the make.conf file. Even a virtual box has it’s own config.
*********************** Correction ********************
One correction I saw while watching the video is the date command. What I said was , ‘date month, day, hour & year.
WRONG (corrected in the titles)
Correct: date month, day, hour, MINUTE & year.
So I have debated for a while now on the best way too show the install process. Or if I should even pursue the idea of showing an install at all, and if so then what would be the best way.
I filmed a short piece to test and found out that the picture quality is just barely good enough to actually see the commands so I filmed the process on a Sony video cam. I apologize for the bad audio and pic quality but I do believe it is legible.
Obviously I cannot post all my notes here so I posted them as titles on the bottom of the screen in order of the installation.
There is no substitute for the official ‘handbook’.
The link for the handbook:
This process started at 8:30ish AM and I rebooted into the desktop (end of the video) at 12:30ish PM (Same day lol). Then it was time to install all the necessary software to complete the install & make Gentoo Linux usable and accessible.
I truly hope this video helps the curious of you out there. It just takes time. However I am finding that once the long installation of required/desired software, then most of the price has been paid & it’s not much different than most other rolling release distros. (Updates less than OpenSUSE Tumbleweed does)
I have been continually impressed with the consistent low sys resource usage. Htop consistently reports less the 400Mb of RAM at fresh boots.
Thanks for watching!!
Let me know if you give Gentoo a try OR if you saw something I did and know an easier way, by all means I’m listening. For example setting the fstab with the readout of cat /proc/mounts for more detailed info for the fstab.
Peace out, stay safe and I’ll catch ya later.
