Situated between Berlin and Poland, Lusatia was once Europe’s largest mining region. However, since the 1980s, many open-pit mines have been transformed into artificial lakes. In a decade or so, Lusatia will boast the largest artificial lake complex in Europe, and the region’s leaders hope tourism will boost the economy. But what appeared to be an especially enticing solution for this region, is being challenged by climate change and drought, as FRANCE 24’s team on the ground reports.
