Florida Dragline Mining Limestone



I was telling someone about Florida draglines last night, so I figured it was appropriate to share this. As mentioned earlier this week, almost all mining in the state is underwater due to the extraordinary water table.

This is a refurbished dragline mining limestone for cement production. Once the machine piles it on the surface, loaders mine the piles after the water drains.

The operator relies on depth marks on the hoist rope and an advanced computer system to gauge where he’s digging and to what depth.

You could easily park a pickup within that bucket. From this perspective, it’s deceivingly small.

  1. Might be mistaken, but that looks like a cat bucket. There are only 11 in existence so far. Or cat copied this design. They hope to replace Hendrix buckets. However, Hendrix buckets were designed with some of the best hydrodynamic properties available. Notice the water that was retained in bucket upon lifting. Hendrix do not do that. Pretty cool
