External GPUs Kinda Suck (But This One Doesn’t)

The MinisForum DEG1 is the first external GPU dock that I’ve found to be truly exciting: it has an Oculink connection, works with …

  1. Always thought egpus were cool but just couldn't bring myself to get one. Doesn't make a ton of sense for me as that psu, gpu and adapter is almost the same size as my Dan A4 build. I just bring my hades canyon nuc if I don't need the extra power.

  2. Your results on the Thunderbolt in Horizon FW are exagerated, you were VRAM strained on the 3060 TI, so the game will store textures on the VRAM, and that leads to more bandwidth use.
This may be lessened with a higher VRAM GPU.
Just search up PCI-E 2 vs 3 vs 4, similar issue, limited on bandwidth.

  3. Oculink. USB4. Thunderbolt. That weird ASUS connector.. The biggest issues with EXT GPU is the lack of standards.

A mini ITX build with a 6-8 core CPU and similar GPU to the 3060ti will have more I/O ports on the back/front for all peripheral connections. Without worrying much about future compatibility. And wouldn't be that much bigger. My silverstone SG13 I built a few years ago was about 11.5L (3 gal) and newer ITX cases are even smaller now.

Cool device though. If external GPUs had a set in stone connection standard AND plug and play use, I'd consider getting it for a mini pc or laptop someday.

  4. Great Channel! learned so much. I think you might be selling eGPU a little short on the min pc front. It would be great to do a round up of laptops and desktops with the 6/780m. I've been looking at a dell 16 laptop with a 780m for $650 but trying to build a desktop with a top iGpu at anywhere close to the $350 – $500 that you can get a 6/780m mini on amazon is tough. Given the low 30 watt tdp of the dell laptop I'd expect worse performance than the mini. Basically this eGpu looks nice for those that want to get their ps3/wii u fix on a mini and then maybe in the future step up to Cyberpunk 2077. I just can't find a desktop in the $500 range that does retro gaming as well a 6/780m mini but with the ability to at a later date add a dGpu.

  5. I feel like you're highly overestimating the benefits of "upgradability" here, talking about how a some solutions are a one and done (or what you get at that slice of time) but that's true for most PC components, when you buy a desktop CPU you do get a handful of upgrade paths but after that you have to buy a whole new computer again once there's a new socket and when you replace your GPU when usually happens to it? For me it's rarely an old backup pc or giving it away, more often though it just goes into a corner to never be used or put on ebay for about $50.

Also would like to point out the 7600M you were comparing, that's so good, in raw numbers sure the 3060 ti is great but gameplay wise I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a meaningful difference, I was using a Radeon 7850 up until around 2018 which is still worse than that 780M, so yeah these modern mobile chips are total powerhouses.

  6. if this had TB4/USB4 along with oculink i would get it for sure, like having it be multipurpose + would also wish they would design something u could built into a mini itx case ^^ so u could have the gpu inclosed.

  7. I would be a lot more interested in this if it ran over USB 4 or Thunderbolt. A little too limited by oculink, but I hope they'll look at making a version with broader compatibility!

  8. Have u ever heard of small form factor build lol can't use the space excuse anymore idk why anyone would spend so much money on these hand helds when a sff build will blow it out the water in performance if your gaming on the go the yea but other than that its a waste of money

  9. Why do all Youtuber
    Use Low End GPU
    Not High End GPU
    Using Oculink
    3060 TI is sooo Weak
    Use More Powerful GPU
So If i Can Realy Use
    4070 +
    Using Oculink

    I Dont Like Buying
Things That Expensive That Will Not Work
    On Laptop

  10. I like this idea since I have older graphics cards and power supplies available. Unfortunately my Mac mini 2018 uses thunderbolt 3 not oculink and I don’t have oculink on my Ryzen laptop either.
