Episode2 – Docker, Rancher and Portainer

In this video we spend around 20 minutes getting Docker installed on our VM so that we can start deploying some home lab resources in the form of Rancher and Portainer.

Rancher is a complete software stack for teams adopting containers. It addresses the operational and security challenges of managing multiple Kubernetes clusters, while providing DevOps teams with integrated tools for running containerized workloads.

My intention for Rancher is to use this to deploy Kubernetes clusters into my home lab but also possibly into the public cloud as well. Is running this on a VM the best place for this? Should I run this somewhere else?

Portainer is a universal container management tool that can work with both Docker and Kubernetes to make the deployment and management of containerized applications and services easier and more efficient.

My intention for running portainer is that it can help visualise this Docker Host and the workloads I have running there as well as connecting to external Docker Hosts if we have any in the future, Kubernetes clusters and more importantly HashiCorp Nomad clusters, I have a plan down the road to get hands-on with Nomad as well.

In the next video I am hoping to dive back into Rancher, get to grips with navigation and start building some clusters, or at least one.
