DR Congo’s M23 rebels captures Rubaya, key smartphone mineral mining town – While the Democratic Republic of Congo boasts vast mineral resources, making it potentially one of the wealthiest nations on the continent, it continues to struggle with ongoing insurgency and widespread resource exploitation. The M23 insurgents have gained control over Rubaya, a significant mining region in Eastern DRC. Situated in Bahunde, Masisi Territory, within North Kivu province, Rubaya holds extensive reservoirs of coltan, essential for manufacturing batteries in electric cars and cellphones. The rebels took possession of the town on Tuesday night following fierce clashes with government troops.
The Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a key coltan mining town fall to rebel forces. Bertrand Bisiimwa, the political leader of M23, stated that the rebel faction, which has seized considerable territory from government forces in recent months, has no intention of controlling the mining resources in that area. Bisiimwa asserted that the region housed a training facility for armed groups plotting assaults against civilians.
“On Tuesday, our forces came under attack from the enemy’s heavy army and infantry in Mishaki, Karuba, Kagundi and surrounding areas,” claimed Bisiimwa, “Our forces responded in self-defence,” he continued. The rebels instructed the Rubaya mine operators to carry on their work undisturbed, emphasizing that the mine is not a military concern.
