  1. Could Ukrainian drones become landmines if shot down? In a nutshell, this would be a bad idea because attaching a land mine to a drone with sacrifice payload or endurance if that wasn’t the drone’s primary purpose.

  2. Also, land mines themselves aren't that useful (especially as randomly placed IEDs like in the idea posited here). You can tell because a bunch of countries are willing to sign an agreement that they promise not to use them: they get more value from the (for lack of a better term) PR of saying "we will not use this evil weapon" than they would from using it, and if they ever REALLY need it anyway they likely have an ally that generally doesn't sign any such agreements (for NATO this often being the US), so they can just inform their ally of the enemy position and let one of their pilots get another check-mark on their Geneva Checklist.

  3. err actually its already in use, its not that it can be used for anti personnel , we already have tank grade being used in conjunction with a 3rd party detonator to clear trench positions and shed tanks

  4. When a drone is diving down on a target, I assume it can use dead reckoning or visual targeting, no?
That's in case that the target has a signal blocker on it/him, that blocks the pilot's signal as it nears impact,

  5. But drones are already carrying ordinance, whether rockets, grenades, mortars, etc. Would it really be that tough to rig up a system that would proximity detonate that pre-existing ordinance if the drone didn't arm it, was shot down, and in effect, become a landmine?

  6. I think a more practical way to do it would be to have drones loitering on the ground nearby trafficked areas that could be put on standby power mode so when surveillance sees the enemy They can pop up out of nowhere and either hit vehicles or have a shrapnel pattern pointing either forward or down to spray soft targets

  7. It would become a UXO and technically if you step on it or touch it. You could set it off depending on the tigger mechanism. Otherwise everyone hates small anti personnel landmines because all they do is kill or harm kids after the war.

  8. But what if, and bear with me here, we had swarms of drones dedicated to automated 'fast reaction' AT mining operations in response to armored vehicles moving towards some objective?

  9. I don’t think Ukraine is even allowed to use anti personnel mines, they signed a treaty promising not to, and they don’t have any in stockpiles.

Doesn’t say anything about tank mines though, they use those all the time, and they’re great. Just too big to put on a drone in practice.

  10. Not to mention for a landmine to be effective it actually has to have a good amount of explosive in it, which would weigh down the drone. it would also mean that they could pick off the drones before they get to enemy lines and then they just become a weapon against themselves.
