Buying a 2013 Mac Pro in 2024? I need HELP! ๐
As part of my slow descent into madness, I find myself trawling eBay looking for a 2013 “trash can” Mac Pro… not because I need one, or because it makes any kind of practical sense in 2024… what is it about this iconic Mac that keeps me coming back for more punishment?!

It can also run windows via boot camp really well on windows 10.
got a 4 core 16GB 256 D300 + 8 core 64GB 1TB D700 ( racing them daily against a 2023 MP M2 64GB ) … and loving it ๐
I need more Mac Pro 2013 videos๐พ
I need LOTS OF GPU for ADOBE BRIDGE 100% preview EDITING huge amounts of ssds and HDs with huge image folders ( 2000+ 120MB Raw files ) and files up to 4.2GB 16bit files >>> which one to buy ? what graphics card ? how many cores ? what ssd model make ? what else ?????
The best choice ever
I bought one, and iโm loving it, old school x86 forever, for music production is perfect and for programming with java, python and C, works great with sql, i donโt need more, oh yes dual boot with linux and work for other 10 years.
I upgraded all the way from a 2012 MacBook Pro (non-retina, large matte screen) stuck on macOS Catalina all the way to this 2013 Mac Pro (now stuck on macOS Monterey, but at least Turbotax ran on it [well, this year]!). A world of difference (in performance) for 10x lower price than for what this machine once sold! Maxed it out. Lightroom performs far better than it did on the MacBook. Sure, the latest Macs are great, but this is still a steal and perfectly usable. Might run a little hot (though quiet), but it's still as cool looking as it ever was!
Thinking same. Music use. I'm leaning toward 6 core with d300 x2 as least issues and cheepest. Trying to wait on m4 minis . Only home studio use.
I like this design also … BUT really want to M silicone in first aluminium iMac chassis …. love those curve edges instead of sharp that came later … and new iMac as you have? That's just ugly and unappealing
Thanks Iโm in the debate over a 2010-2012 Mac Pro or a 3013 Mac Pro and max them out.
Just got one for $180 to replace a ACEMAGICIAN MINI PC. The PC was a nice little computer, but being limited to Windows really didn't work out for me. Plus because the components in the MINI PC were too closely put together, the headphone port started buzzing a lot for no reason at all. Don''t really need it to do video editing or music processing, so it should work fine for me for browsing etc. 16GB RAM, 500 GB SSD. Upgradable to 128GB RAM, 1-2TB SSD, 8-core CPU. Pretty sure I can get to Sonoma as well through the Open Core Legacy Patcher. Plus it's cute as hell. Like it better than the cube. Way more useful than my iMac G3 iLamp, which also looks good on my desk.
I got a 12 core d500, the 12 core was an upgrade I did myself. Music production as a hobby was my main motivation plus lust that I always had since trash can first came out. I started with Logic Pro trial, but it did not do it for me, although lots of free virtual instruments. I went to a Studio One subscription and got a good start in making some small productions. I got a Steinberg audio interface and as it came with Cubase I tried that and split my time between both. I replace the audio interface with a Focusrite thunderbolt. Later I wanted to experiment with video music production so I switched to Digital Producer and that is where I am now. It is extremely powerful for the money and I can use it to make some hobby youtube videos. I shoot the video and use DaVinci to edit the video with intro and then import the video into Digital Producer where I do music and voice over and final edit. I have Native Instruments keyboard and Maschine Studio and use a lot of their instruments and software as well.
I felt that same bug since I first saw one. The more people hated it, the more I wanted it.
It is a guilty pleasure. I just scored one today locally. I am looking forward to messing around with it.
I have a 6 core 32gb ram which I open core legacy to ventura & it runs flawlessly imo, if you have the money to go m1-m3 id def go that route, but if not this is the most powerful mac computer youโll run across eBay has these things for $300 you can swap out the cpu, ram, & go m2 ssd if you want.. I honestly donโt know why it gets the bad reviews that it does.. these YouTubers get paid to promote and endorse the latest greatest thing but this thing is a beast & thanks to open core legacy it lives on..
Apple got crucified for the Mac Pro 2013 yet got lauded for the Mac Studio. The former has upgradeable CPU, RAM and SDD; the latter has ZERO upgradeability and looks like a lunch box!!!ย
I call my beloved Mac Pro 2013 my "Classic" Mac Studio.
I still got my Mac Pro 6.1, 8 core CPU, D700 Graphics , 128 GB RAM. Iโm a professional filmmaker I shoot only in Apple Prores, and I have zero complaint.
For me itโs nostalgia. This Mac Pro holds a special place in my heart just because of its design. Iโm playing with the idea of buying one just because I want it.
I would love to see you modify an M1 Mac mini to replace the innards of this computer. Maybe get a powered USB-C hub in there to replace the thunderbolt panel
hmm.. anyway to mod its fan or added fan to help this poor heating up trash can ??
Always wanted one, just loved the design. Iโm getting dangerously close too buying it. Thought about it to use it as a server or like a nas.
Great video! I always loved this machine and back in the day, could never have afforded one. Your video echoes all my sentiments. I now do simulation modeling and while there's better approaches, I've been cruising eBay for similar nostalgic reasons, partially just to offload models to the Cylinder Mac Pro and free up my M1 Max MBP.
Iโm in the same position except I have never had one but I have always wanted one.
I love mine, an eight core 3.0GHz with 32G. It was so cheap, it was literally an experiment to see if I could move all the way forward in MacOS. I did not realize such an advanced Mac existed until I finally bought it. Silent, small, lightweight and sort of beautiful. It is an ultra-capable Pro Tools computer, replacing my 3.46GHz Hex processor cheese grater. I have been able to use one fewer flight cases for my system due to this replacement. I will probably get a second for backup. So happy with it.
๐
so are you saying that you been having issues making music with the m1 computers? or is it because there is plugins that don't work? so in the 2013 you can make music a lot better? or can you explain why you want to go back? great videos I watch all the ones talking about the 2013 Mac Pro you have made so great job!
This 2013 Mac Pro is great! I use my Mac Pro 5.1 2010 as an old audio recorder, Mac OS Mountain Lion system, everything works perfectly, without breaks or crashes. I tried with opencore but it made my mac terribly stupid, sometimes with unexpected crashes etc…I abandoned the idea of โโopencore. With each advance Apple makes in its operating system and hardware, things become more complex and full of crashes, even if it's the M1 or M3. I made great music and will continue to make it on my old Mac Pro.
I am thinking of one also. Mostly interested in performance with canonโs digital photo professional (DPP) software. Rosetta 2 does a poor job with this software and my M1 Max Mac Studio is sluggish when I try to edit eos r5 raw files. Activity monitor shows the cores are not fully utilized when running on ARM. In contrast my ancient intel iMac shows 100% use of all cores.
I think Rosetta easily subtracts 25% or more performance with this software and canon shows no intention of making a native ARM version.
I would love to see how the trash can Mac Pro handles DPP which is very CPU heavy (almost no GPU use). I would also like to do some light gaming with my kids under windows. Parallels just canโt run some games. And while my Mac is primarily for creative and work projects I would love to see how it handles modern games too.
These are actually still pretty fast machines.
I have one. Bought it a little over a month ago. Love it!
Loved your video!!
Good video, and I hope you found one. I recently got one for free and was able to update it to Monterey. So far, it has a 16 GB memory running a graphic AMD Firepro D500 3GB. I'm replacing the hard to a 1tb soon. I only use it for music production. So far, Protools Artist and Ableton Live are running smoothly..
Just got one from work today for free! We were using them as build machines for years (I'm a software developer at a mobile game company) and the decision was finally made to upgrade to new Mac Minis as this old 2nd gen Pro no longer supports any further macOS updates. They were literally going to just toss them in the bin because Apple offered $0 for trade-in lol. So happy to give one of these trash cans a loving home ๐ and it feels like a steal now that I've seen how much some refurbs are going for online!
Just ordered one with 12 core and 64 GB of Ram and a pair of D700 GPU's fot $200 with free shipping, I wanted 2 but unfortunately he had only one.
Hi, after watching your YT videos I went out and bought a MacPro 6,1 D500 6core and plan to run VM's after upgrading ram & CPU however, I want to run finalcut & logic. what version of macos works best with FC & Logic on the mac pro? I have heard Monteray has issues but Catalina runs better for both FC & Logic… would like to hear your views just on video editing & Music pro side..
I never thought of getting one until last week & I luv it. remoting into it and running projects puts a huge smile on my face ๐
do you have any experience with the thunderbolt 2 to a modern dock? i have purchased one but even though there are lights on both the dock & the external ssd enclosure no drive shows up on my desktop.
Just purchased one. Will be arriving tomorrow. 12 core, 16g ram , D500. I dont need it but couldnt believe the price. under $300. I still use my 5,1 for music and photo's videos but felt the need to have one of these for my collection. I still have the first imac 17" intel machine. Still works. I will upgrade the ram and ssd. I like that i can run Monterey on it since my M1 macbook runs that. Plus the 12 core cpu should be fun. The Trashcan was the reason i built a hackintosh. Cant believe im getting one. But as i said its for my collection. " This mac pro was 6-10k when it came out fully loaded and i paid $300. " Gotta love it. Thanks for the post. Subbed.
i won 12 core 64gb 512gb with D300s for 345 USD mainly for collection and testing fun maybe music is good price..?
This machine has serious benefits over any other desktop. It might not be the fastest, yet it is seriously fast, totally pretty, tons of connectors, but the best is the OS support. This machine runs a proper OS of your choice: Mojave/Catalina, Windows 10, Linux. You don't need to run a candy-crush MacOS (Big Sur and up, although Big Sur is quite acceptable compared to the obnoxiousness of Sonoma), nor the data-hamster with Microoft account BSDM Windows 11 has become.
Yes, you need help. Yes. Welcome to the club. ๐
I have one of those, with a thunderbolt display, it is my youngest son computer. A couple of years i get a MacBook Pro 15 inch from 2015, a fair deal from eBay, changed some keys to mach my country, bought a local Thunderbolt Display, get a Matias macos keyboard anda mouse, offered it to my youngest son has his first computer, worked almost has a desktop, so a few months ago i sold it and bought a Mac Pro 6.1, with D700โsโฆ i was almost bought a 5.1, but get a good deal with a 6.1 and i can use the thunerbolt display with no more investments on a 5.1 modelโฆ
I'm the same I just want one. I'm looking at it for the same reason you're looking at them. I would like to see the performance of Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro. Is the 8 core all you need or is the 12 core better for those tasks.
I got one from Apple on a 30-day trial, at work. It was sweet. So smooth, so quiet, never a hiccough. Always wanted one. Will I finally pull the trigger? It's hard to make the argument over the current generation cpu's. Now, if Apple brought this design back with ARM chips…
I just purchased a 3.7 Quad core with 16GB ram, no SSD and it has D500s on it. Picked up a 256 GB SSD for $35 to install and paid $230 for the machine. Looking forward to adding to my Mac collection.
I upgraded my trash can Mac Pro to OS12 using the Open Core Legacy Patcher. I also have a Thunderbolt 2 external drive enclosure with 4 SSD drives for sample libraries and client files for book publishing. Very happy with things so far and hope to avoid a Mac Studio for another 12 to 18 months or more.
I bought one on eBay in October last year and using it for Virtual Machine and for developing and to run Windows 7/10 for special work, it's working great and even I use my thunderbolt 3 dock with it by using Apple thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter and everything is working great just the speed is 20Gb/s instead of 40Gb/s and you can connect newer devices with USB-C to the dock.
Specs (made in 2018 according to the serial number):
1. Intel Xeon E5-2690V2 Processors (3.0GHz 8-Core)
2. 64GB of RAM (Genuine apple RAM Black PCB)
3. 1TB NVMe Apple SSD (Genuine)
4. D500 AMD GPU
I actually have a maxed out 12 Core Mac Pro 6,1 running MacOS Sonoma (Through opencore) and for me it runs flawlessly. I know itโs not the most powerful, but I only paid $480 for it. So I am happy with the performance.
i'd like to boot OS9 or even 8 again!
bought one two months ago…..loooooove. Will be doing roll your own LLM
Ive been eyeballing one of these for a long time; did you end up getting one?
