This started with Freecycle in the early 2000s. Itβs kinda easier in FB groups now though.
There's also a buy nothing app. It's really good, and avoids the book of faces
I love this idea! It sounds like a neighborhood co-op? Thank you for sharing.
Berlin here: there were even Free-'shop's. One was run by a collectivec and lost the place due to gentrification , one was run by a single person and lost its place due to work overload and organisational resons. The idea is phantastic! You could bring stuff (and after Marie Kondo many people were in a minimalistic phase) and you could always find stuff.
If you have to buy something, buy used. eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark, etc. You can still buy things but try to buy used.
I feel like anyone just having a coffee carafe sitting around is probably a hoarder and wont want to part with it. Anyone who would has probably already thrown it away. Personally, I am working on not sitting on things I don't use, so prob wouldn't be a good candidate for that, but as for providing free services–yes, I do this for my neighbors and they for me.
Humans discover bartering, and it's a fine thing
I keep telling peeps to Boyctt don't buy new.
I use Trash Nothing. It's the same concept & the goal is to keep things out of the landfills.
We call it Freecycle and I have gotten so much cool stuff off there. Two chicken coops. Plus size clothing. Coats. Someone recently did a free estate sale.
Ok I will risk FB to check this out
I gave away an apartment sized washing machine to a single mom in my local buy nothing group!
I replaced it with a different one that works better for me but it was still really good relatively new machine and I probably could've sold it for $125 based on the other Facebook ad but I know what it's like when you get life changing kinds of gifts, and that for single mom with little tiny people to take care of, not having a washing machine is miserable.
Love Buy Nothing. Repurposing, recycling, repairing, upcycling is my jam.
I deleted my Facebook when corporate America started using my data against me
It was 2008 not 2020
I have given and received on Buy Nothing, I love it.
Thank you for this tip: I've been looking for "mutual aid" groups & coming up empty!
Wish me luck: I'm going to venture onto Facebook! π¬
Seems adjacent to Freecycle/Cheapcycle groups on a finer scale.
Thanks for working to stop America's bing and purge economic mindset. Decluttering items you are not using at the moment, only to turn around in a few months, replacing said item with a similar product. If a product really needs to go, finding it a new home helps your family, friends and community retain wealth. When we share we support each other's wellbeing.
Man, here where I now live in a small-ish village in Italy, this is just, every day for the last really long time, who knows how long……

We helped start that on BI when it all began – Buy Nothing is an amazing community builder. Hats off to Rebecca and Leisel for starting that movement !
