I still have my 4,1 Mac Pro. That and a 15” MacBook Pro were always my dream Mac’s to own.
It’s sad we will never see another Mac like it. Framework is the closest thing!

For anyone watching, delidding those CPUs is a pain in the ass. I ruined one set a few years ago and wound up paying the extra $ to get them pre-delidded (say that 3 times!). The 2010 models – which is what I have now – (native 5,1s) are easier because there is ample clearance for the lids. I'm daily driving a 2010 "Max Pro" – maxed out on literally everything sans GPU although I do have an RX 580 which works great for what I do (not gaming). I'm dual booting macOS Sonoma & Garuda (Arch) Linux.
Those 5690s are great xeons.
Since you used OCLP, you have now got enableUEFIGOP at your disposal as long as OCLP is set as the default. Though fun thing, you can flash the same enableUEFIGOP into the bootrom of these systems, allowing for even the native boot picker to show up!

Do you know if the 5,1 will support an NVIDIA RTX A2000? I ask because the A2000 runs on PCIe bus power without external power connectors. Also, do you have plans for a BootCamp Windows install?

Loved it! Impressive that you were able to dual boot Monterey and Ubuntu 24.04 with the RTX 2070 working. I wonder how it would perform with the Phoronix Test Suite testing the GPU. Love the UNIX t-shirt. It would interesting if you could triple boot with Windows 10/11, Ventura/Legacy OpenCore, and Ubuntu 24.04. Great episode!!

The Xeon Workstation I mentioned in my last post by chance runs native MacOS from 10.7 to 10.14 WITHOUT ANY CHANGES directly from Apple-Boot-devices. When I read that some Intel 5000X boards can straight forward boot MacOS without additional software I tried it and it worked like a charm. My board identifies as an Intel S5000XDN which is a S5000XVN with an additional GPIO debug header. I just need to disable the 16Bit-compability support module, aka classic BIOS, so it falls back to EFI 0.9 – nowadays we run UEFI 2.x, EFI 0.9 literally can only boot MacOS and some utterly archaic linux-Sysloader. But then it is just a Mac Board made by Intel. Insane. My guess, Apple used these boards for developing the Mac Pro. It was rare enough that people wouldn't go their way to use it to run MacOS.
But to be honest, I only testet it when my buddy brought his Mac over about three times with MacOS 10.8, 10.14 and 10.15 – the later didn't start for missing 32Bit support. I guess the EFI was 32Bit only even though the system itself is running 64Bit very fine.
I am sure we all agree that buying Apple to run Linux is utterly stupid because you can get the same performance from the x86-World for a third of the price and with much more choice and expandability too. But using a gifted Computer for fun, why not. In 2007 a customer bought from me a 8x2500Mhz Xeon Workstation and six years later gifted it back to me – which is still my third most often used computer nowadays – with a RAID1 from 2x500GByte HD and 16GByte of memory. It cost back then €2500, a less powerful and much louder Apple system was €8000.
After I received the computer back for free I slowly upgraded it with stuff lying around, first two CPUs with 8x3333Mhz in total which I got from Ebay for €5.50, a surplus 500GByte SSD replacing the dead hard drives and 8x16GByte=128GByte (!!!) of memory I got for €21 also from Ebay (damn I wish I had the S5000UVX board with 16 memory channels, just for the lulz), also it came without Graphics but I had a Radeon 580 lying around and it did good. A very capable computer, even nowadays.

If that’s a real 5,1 then there’s no need to de-lid. Only the dual CPU 4,1 requires that.

I'll check when I get home, but I don't think it's actually necessary to delid the cpu. If I member correctly I just added some small washers or something… or maybe I just didn't tighten the heatsinks all the way.
It isn't a recent Nvidia driver tho. Make sure to update. I think there a repo for Ubuntu with fresh video drivers.
Once the NVME is in, I'd love to see this go up against a Ryzen 8-core. There's the little difference in power. 95W a piece on the Xeons vs 65W for the Ryzen. Ouchies. Be interesting to see how much that third RAM channel balances the disadvantage of the DDR3. About a decade ago my bro had me refurbish a HP Z80 (?) for him. It's quad channel made it quite peppy.

Ive done all of this except the pixels mod on a 5,1. this is cool. i use POPOS because of how well it works with the hardware out of the box. i use it as my primary workstation. Cant wait to see what else you come up with. Now I know I can use a 2070 and I might consider ordering one of those cards. Thank you. I wasn't clear, did you mod the card to show the boot menu also ? If so how was this done.
I love the 5,1 case design. This was the highest level of design achieved by Apple. It's been downhill ever since. The cpu improves every year while the overall design just stagnates. Basically modern Macs are glorified iPhones. Use them for a few years and chunk them in the garbage.
Wanna Try this on a 3,1 Also? The 3,1 can boot nvme with special modifications, and can take 64gb ddr2, probably will take the rtx 2070 as well. Its almost worth it.

As a former cheese grater mac pro owner I really want to add some things to consider here:
The mac pro is old. Really old. Really really old. Like 65nm lithography old. Now imagine two of such processors. In combination with ECC RAM that has to be actively cooled. These Servers will eat electricity like crazy. A normal single household in Germany paid like 30 Euro in electricity back then. My bill was at 90 Euro (even with a normal priced contract). And with great energy consumption comes great heat. These things are HOT. The ECC RAM runs at almost 100 degrees celsius. This thing is something to keep in a corner of a room you never want to set a foot in, inside a house that makes use of solar energy.
