📰 BEML Making Coal Mining “Green”
Underground mining is the future of coal mining, said Shantanu Roy, the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of BEML Limited in an interview with our Editor Subhajit Roy on the sidelines of IME 2023 in Kolkata. BEML Limited is a diversified company manufacturing and supplying products, services and support to Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction and Rail & Metro.
BEML CMD said, “Underground mining is an answer to the sustainable coal production as it does not involve any kind of displacement of people and deforestation.” He informs that Coal India plans to increase underground coal production to 100 MT by 2030.
Efficient extraction of resources is important to support green and sustainable mining. To support this, BEML has already developed and manufacturing 100-tonne and 180-tonne class electrically driven hydraulic excavators for mining applications.
Talking about the mining industry performance, he said, “Last year the total Indian coal production was 893 MT and is expected to cross 1 billion tonne this year out of which Coal India’s share will be around 78%.”
