Battletech’s Clint, the Defiant Gunslinger!

#Battletech #BattletechLore #Mechwarrior

The Clint. The physical manifestation of peacetime military procurement. The real hangar queen. At least, until more recently. A gunslinger, it features decent speed and okay firepower, at the cost of armor and the fact you couldn’t repair the earlier ones without paying a premium.

But how does it compare nowadays?

  1. The Clint is middle-of-the-road, and that's okay. It's a team player that works in multiple roles, and as a company commander you can always find a place & purpose for it. Or you can just sell it to Discount Dan and spend the fee on a Wolfhound instead. πŸ˜†πŸ˜› Seriously though, in 3025 the Clint is a fairly mobile AC 5 that is good at putting the hurt on the abundant bug mechs and some other Lights and Mediums that lean into the short-range profile It's also a nice #4 mech for Bodyguard/Flanker work in a Command Lance or Battle Lance. Past the Clan Invasion though the upgrades have to be made to keep it competitive. A DA Clint is still a Clint, it's just a higher-teched Clint that can look at a Pack Hunter and sneer "Wanna-be!" The flaws have hilarious reality-based woes, but those will only be a problem in 3025 or other pre-Clan chaos campaigns or Mechwarrior RPG campaigns.

  2. It’s a shame that the CLTN-3-4T has the armament it does. It might do okay as a screening unit for fast mechs, since those MXPLs and cluster LB5X rounds have fantastic bonuses to score hits at medium and long ranges due to the Improved Targeting quirk, while offering some long range critseeking/flyswatting ability for heavier assets. But that’s still not a lot of damage.

You could swap out that LB-5X for a LAC5 with two tons of ammo, and have tonnage for another MXPL, allowing it to act as a light mech deterrent if you load up precision ammo, and while also having enough raw damage to force a piloting skill roll if it hits with an alpha strike. Again, that improved medium/long range quirk paired with pulse lasers and ammo that reduces to-hit maluses makes this a potentially dangerous mech when heavily customized.

  3. I lpve rhe Clint as the leader of a bug hunter lance. Even in 3025, swqpping out the AC for a LL, heat sinks or a PPC kakes it better,. However an AC-5 in 3025 lets it out-range almost all lights and knock out bugs at range.

  4. I adore the Clint. It doesn't need to be amazing at any one thing. It's basically a light trooper. It's not as sturdy or reliable as a Vindicator, but it's a lot faster. It's not as fast as a Cicada, but I can't kill it just by looking at it.

  5. Hello Prof.

Here at Hellsport Mech Works, in the Stygian Compact (somewhere inside the Staplin Nebula {the Perseus-Cepherus Cloud Complex}) we also 'had a go' at the Clint Mech.
We started with the CLTN-6S variant. Keeping most things in place and only altering a few.
So, the 280 rated XL Engine remains, and the Mech has 12 Inner Sphere DSHS, 11 of which fit into the engine, and a single IS-DSHS is located in the Left Torso. Two ER Large Lasers for the 'main guns', no jump jets, and 7 tons of Heavy Ferro-Fiberous armor. Instead of pulse lasers, the Ghost Lions Legions version has two ER Medium Lasers installed in their place. The Small Cockpit remains from the original design.
Even at a dead run, and 'Alpha Striking' as the pilot does so, does not overheat the Mech what so ever. ( 7 heat each for the ER Large Lasers, 4 heat each for the ER Medium Lasers, and 2 heat for 'running', gives a heat delta of 24, which just happens to be the total the heat sinks can dissipate).
All actuators and even the Myomer Fiber bundles were replaced with readily available 'standard' parts, and the armor was reshaped to cover exposed actuator locations like the knees and elbows of the Mech. This decision did away with the 'proprietary' parts, and fixed the 'readily damaged' actuator problems.

Pilots seem to appreciate this immensely. Commanders seem to like the 'all energy' build to free up the Mech from any Logistics Train. Allowing the Mech to penetrate Enemy lines and strike deeply, without needing resupply of ammo.
The only variation on this is when the CLTN-6n (GL) is fielded, it is usually grouped up with Mechs that are also 'all energy' builds for their raiding. Where the exception comes in, is that the group of Deep Penetration Raiders will usher a Mobile Repair Gantry tank, and a couple of Supply Vehicles to replace damages, like armor, weapons, and actuators. A fourth vehicle, usually referred to as the 'party bus', is sent along to house the Techs and Astechs that will work on any repairs in the field, using the supplies and gantry.
Oh, and before I forget to do so, please accept my thanks on behalf of the Stygian Compact for the purchase of several hundred tons of Heavy Ferro-Fiberous Armor per year, shipped on our own proprietary Jump and Drop Ships. The above Mech is NOT the only one that uses Heavy Ferro armor and the Compact is building a good supply in Reserve in case of little things like Invasions, and unexpected reverses while deployed on Contract.

  6. the targeting system of the clint is solid if its quirks are any indication. shame no one put it on something else that was more solid. imagine a sniper mech like the awesome or marauder with it. or heaven forbid the clanners put it into anything not called the clint IIC.

  7. The Clints the Taurians got were not free and in fact I'd call them the most overpriced Clints ever because the cost was being allied with the Capellans. 0/10 worst deal would not recommend.

  8. I made this argument elsewhere. The Clint is awesome. It's front armour isn't amazing; it isn't supposed to be. The Clint was designed as a bodyguard/interceptor unit. When your front armour is an Atlas, you don't need to worry about armour. The weapons on it are meant to cover the weaknesses of larger mechs. The Clint isn't a hero mech. It's a dedicated little buddy. You focus on the big scary threat, and the Clint will take you apart.

  9. When this came up on the HPG I got curious. Lo and behold, a good deal of our Clints are from Flanagan's. In fact one of my modders wouldn't stop raving about "ferro crystal lattice structures" or some such malarkey. We trialed these Clints against some of our Assassins. The Assassins lost every trial. So I guess we'll keep buying your Clints.

  10. Great Video. I love how it start3d out being complete crao, but the Helm revisions actually save the design. So many times the Helm revisions suck, but not this time!

It is strange that the IIC is lacking endo, ferro, and double heat sinks. Missed opportunity.
