  1. The problem for modern governments now as opposed to yesteryear is that we are no longer willing to lose the lives of our sons in defence of todays corrupt and dishonest politicians and their meddling in foreign affairs or indeed warmongering in order to steal another countries assets and natural resources.
Conscription would fail miserably for any cause except that of a homeland invasion.
We are no longer a player on the world stage either, our threats and sabre rattling falls on deaf ears and will go unheeded by all.

  2. Perhaps it should be looked at as, The World at War. The earlier war of between Japan and China, 1937 – 1945.
And the war in Europe, 1939 – 45. Both were about land grab, and earth resources.
Appeasement , more than not is an economic influence, and at times, self interests.
WW2, world wide, has a estimated "80 million fatalities" , half of which were civilians, certainly the most deadly in history..
WW 1, was the beginning of mechanised war, WW 2, technical war.
WW3, ( AI ) , but what would cause it, dominace, resources, self interests?
The problem I have, is identification of the bad guys, there seems to be many these days according to media, perhaps I should ask Al..
Sadly, little wars lead to rather large ones.
Conflicts are a pain, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, had the right idea,, "Two Tribes"..

  3. Who among the political leaders studies and understands history? They know how to reach the highest office, by and through populism, inciting emotions against the internal and the external opponent, real or imaginary, to justify their actions.
The often used "appeasement" is a justification for armament, and in the end regime change. This is "we want eight and we won't wait" in new clothes.
Then and now, those in charge think they are in control, like chess players having planned each move till the end. But politics is different, especially if each of the known, but more over the unknown players, have their own perception of the world, their own agenda. What we could see in the past 20 years, in Eastern Europe, as well as the Near and Far East, is ignorance and blunder the stubborn resistance to learn that politics is more than blackmail, regime change and missile and air strikes.

On the 27 of June 1914 Britain the Empire in control, after November 1918 the foundations were shattered. Winning the war, did not mean winning the peace, or restoring the "Ancient Regime", it even made it more difficult. The nation was deeply in debt, the resources exhausted, the myth of White invincibility gone with growing consequences, an avalanche of new problems, be it ideologies, social issues or new country emerged.

Since then, the upper-class has fought to preserve as much of their pre-war privileges at home, but also abroad. Just look at Brexit, the Asia-Pacific Alliance, the poodle marching into Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria, this yearning for "East of Aden" and importance.
Where ever the British created or entered a conflict, it did not lead to the planned or desired objective, not there and not home.

  4. The top 5 reasons for the WW1 given by experts are :

    1. Alliance Systems (30%)
The complex network of alliances in early 20th-century Europe created an environment where a conflict between two countries could quickly involve others. These alliances meant that any declaration of war could trigger a chain reaction, pulling allied nations into the conflict.

    2.Militarism (25%)
An arms race among the great powers led to a significant buildup of military forces and capabilities:

    3.Nationalism (20%)
Intense national pride and rivalries heightened tensions:

    4. Imperialism (15%)
Competition for colonies and global influence fueled distrust and rivalry:

    5. Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (10%)

  5. Well the First world war in comparison today is a vastly different landscape. Back then alliances were pretty fickle and often more nebulous especially Compared to NATO. There was no U.N back then either or nuclear weapons of course. When the war started it wasn't clear if the British Empire would even get involved directly as the catalyst of entering the war was Germany's invasion of Belgium who's neutrality Britain had guaranteed. Secondly Italy was actually in an alliance with Austria/Hungary and Germany but when the war started decided not to join in until 1915 and even then they switched sides to the Entente. Finally the world back then was far more unstable and blood thirsty. Almost every major power back then was for war and wanted it as it was the last chapter on the era of colonial expansion and many saw one another as rivals and for almost a thousand years the usual way to solve grievances was through combat and war. However what none of them anticipated was how much warfare had changed and was going to due to advances in technology. Germany saw Russia's growing economy as a threat and wanted to end that as quickly as possible, France wanted Alsace-Lorraine back after loosing it in a previous conflict from Germany, Italy wanted parts of the Austro-Hungarian empire which it believed to have rights to and Austria/Hungary had revolutionaries who wanted independence from the empire finally the Ottoman Empire was a shadow of its former self and wanted a war against Russia to take some land back especially in Crimea and to restore itself back as the superpower it once was.

  6. Do historians and policy makers have any influence of significance on the possibility/probability of wars?
Surely it is only the actual governments of the day who really decide what happens before, during and immediately after the wars.
Studying history can be fascinating, but that has no effect on whether wars proceed or not.
Every time a war commences and ultimately ends, there are countless books, articles and analyses of the war commenced, yet commenced they did as if people learned nothing from the past.

  7. If you go to Croatia/former Yugoslavia no-one thinks a shooting in Sarajevo started WWI. The event isn't recognised. Just something i found out travelling there for six years. They more remember the Navy protecting Tito for later governing under Communism.

  8. Appeasement how fitting as we see a Facist enter the White House what will Trump and Putins deal bring to Europe!!?? I can only see chaos to come !!?? I fear for us all !! Europe needs to stand up against Facists Again!! History repeating itself 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse in place to End this world as we know it !!??let's hope the Russian love their children Too Professor!!??

  9. Weimar inflation comes immediately to mind as both Second World War precurse and apt analogy today's economic savagery, self inflicted and wrought martial sanctions swirled terror vortex. China, central planned asinine collective; Russia, chaotic tryranny beset imposed Western sanctions. And the supposedly capitalist United States wrestling Leftist socialism profligacy and simultaneous ultra inflatory US Treasury printing press dollar manufacture. All madness. The transcendant appears to our higher discernment but relegated back down Serbian transit supply, American dollar velocity stilled by consumer debt, Sahm's rule, and the US Army 155mm howitzer's phenomenal accuracy.

  10. Versailles treaty was working reasonably well until the USA 1929 crash which force many countries to repay usa loans Germany was one of those countries. So German economy crash into a depression and one man was telling the German population what they were desperate to hear. There far more similarities to what happen in Germany years before ww2 than ww1 which was base on royal families and countries being allied to each other. WW2 was about economic desperation in Germany because of the debt place on that country. After the Great War the allies concluded we must make Germany pay for the damage they created from the Great War. So massive debts was placed on Germany in turn Germany looked to America for loans to pay these debts to the allies. Some uk politicians was abit uncomfortable with Versailles treaty debts being so high but France wasn’t going to be easy on Germany because large parts of their country was destroyed in the Great War. These days We have massive unsustainable debt’s in western countries and wealthy elites are manipulating this to make money/profits leaving politicians in all western countries in a endless austerity cycle which is forcing populations to vote for people like Trump.!!! if all the Western countries debt didn’t exist, the wealthy elites wouldn’t have this power over western politicians. So debts and the greed of the wealthy elites are driving humanity to WORLD WAR 3. Wonder how many deliberately knowingly doing this.?

  11. Our leaders seem to be stuck the 1930’s. Every other leader that they don’t like is considered to be another Hitler or Stalin.
Russia is still thought to be like the communist USSR, the only bloc that could rival Western powers. The USSR broke up in 1992 and Russia is now a capitalist country. It is much smaller than the USSR was and has no ambitions to spread communism round the world.

  12. The primary cause of WWI was GERMANY. The Germans had been engaging in various soft power/ proxy war attempts to weaken the Entente, which finally turned into a hot war in 1914. WWI was not a surprise to anyone who had been paying attention and was inevitable the moment the German Empire became a central European power.

  13. WW1 is what I would call the first industrial war and the first war where both sides had access to machine guns. Generals were trained in obsolete 19th century style warfare. Lines were more widely stretched. Making communication and coordinating strategies harder, as walkie-talkies hadn't been invented yet.

  14. Speaking from Vatican City yesterday, Pope Francis called out Israeli 'terrorism' in its attacks on innocent Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip. “I continue to receive very serious and painful news from Gaza. Unarmed civilians are subjected to bombings and shootings… It’s war, it’s terrorism,' he said before calling on the congregation to prayer for peace.

  15. It always strikes me that some of the most virulent anti-immigrant sentiments emanate from some of the most loyal and patriotic poppy-wearers. They're remembering the war dead – those who fought and died for our freedoms… and to defeat nationalist ideologies. There's an irony in there which cannot be understated. Hypocrisy writ large.

  16. It always seems that the people's of various countries who have experienced war and conflict pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Those that survived struggling with their own internal battles.
Posturing, prevaricating political leaders ignore the past and their own citizens wish for peace.
