Thousands took to the streets in Serbia’s capital Belgrade to protest against the rebooting of a controversial lithium mine. The protests came after the government was given a deadline to ban the exploration and exploitation of lithium which expired on August 10. Massive protests gripped Serbia amid warning of a plot to topple populist President Aleksandar Vucic and his government. Earlier, Vucic said he had been tipped by the Russian intelligence services that a “mass unrest and a coup” was being planned. The protests in Serbia are being compared to the Maidan uprising in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv that led to the toppling of then president Viktor Yanukovych in 2013.
