AI beats human sleuth at finding problematic images in research papers

In a recent study, published in Nature, independent biologist Sholto David compared the performance of a human image sleuth with that of an AI tool called Imagetwin. David spent several months poring over hundreds of papers in one journal, looking for any with duplicated images. Then he ran the same papers through Imagetwin.
Imagetwin was found to be both faster and more accurate than David at finding problematic images. It found almost all of the 63 suspect papers that he had identified, and it also found 41 that he had missed.
