I have discovered a way to install Plex server in Linux that allows you to access any media file in your home folder, or on a portable USB drive, without having to change any permissions of your files or folders.

This is the download choice for both Ubuntu and Debian 64 bit installs.
This makes a Linux Plex server install very easy, especially for someone who is only going to run Plex on their PC or mini computer.
Debian isn’t cutting edge, which also means it’s probably the most stable Linux distro available to use.
I tried this same trick under Ubuntu 22.04, and while I could see both media folders that were in home and on the portable drive from within Plex, I still lacked permissions to actually access them.
If you’re new to Linux, search out Ventoy, which allows you to copy multiple Linux ISOs to one flash drive that you can boot off from, to then be given a choice of which ISO to boot into.
