When the BMW M135i first arrived it was a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six sedan with rear wheel drive.

Now though, the M135 is an all-wheel drive hatchback with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder under the bonnet. If that’s not enough to bring out the skeptic in you, the new version has lost 50Nm of torque and one of its gears.

Is BMW’s 1 Series flat out in reverse or going through a clever evolution of the model?

  1. Bmw should develop M140 with higher tuned powertrain. Because of deployment of dct bmw lowered the torque to 400Nm. This is shame and I think bmw want any buyer wishing high performance car to buy either m240i or M340i instead.

  2. Golf r, S3 all at similar price point yet offer more power…..hang on, unless you're a hardcore BMW m135 fan why this for less bang compared to two of your market rivals 🤔

  3. 4:45 surely you mean Audi RS3 and not RS4? In any case, the RS3 starts at over $100k and the Mercedes A45 starts at over $130k. The better comparisons are the S3 and A35 both in terms of price and spec.

  4. It wasn't too long ago that I wouldn't have considered a Benz or Audi over a BMW, particularly with the AMG/R/M models. Now? Well… I feel BMW have lost their way a little over the past decade. Much like Subaru…
