I troubleshoot these little boxes frequently since Crestron bought a bunch to use as MTR video conferencing hosts, basically streaming, they crashed all the time so I'm not surprised it didn't play nice w/ OBS. They were underpowered for that case usage, and though, I like the footprint, from a functionality standpoint it's a hard pass for me!
I have a similar Nuc, and Audio only works over one of the HDMI ports, might be worth switching to another port and see if that resolves the issue!
i got 9 of these for free when the company went to a new system for their kiosks. i3's and i5's ……. i use them for everything. i even have a half-height one I have put in my bag as an emergency computer when i have nothing else. the one thing i like about the older ones is that they operate on 12V while the newer ones operate on the standard 19V. you can also modify them internally to do things they're not supposed to do.

That's a cool pick up. I do like mini PCs and always thought the NUC design was really nice. I kind of had the same attraction to the Tiny/Mini/Micro computers when they were new. I wanted one(or a bunch), but not at those prices. Now I have several I got for well under $100 and I love them. I tend to prefer going used these days. You get some amount of cost savings up front compared to the N100, and typically still get a power draw low enough to not matter too much, as the break-even calculator shows. Though I suspect I'll eventually end up with an N100 box down the line used, and hopefully dirt cheap, when everyone else moves on to the next big thing. I recently did have a look at a some NUCs, but ended up buying a Zotac(an M model with a fan, fifth-gen Intel i5 5010U) instead due to it having two ethernet ports so I could have the option to use it as a DIY router. I have another Zotac, a fanless model with a Core M 5y10c that's currently acting as a media server(I don't do on-the-fly transcoding). I like that machine a lot, and the Core M is ideal for a fanless application. It also has two ethernet ports, so it's possible I could use that as a router instead when I finally make my decisions.
GOSH FRICKING DANGIT i had this whole plan of setting up some nuc 7's as a web/multimedia home server of sorts and now many are +100$ from the prices shown in the video on ebay, not your fault just impeccable timing, ive been thinking about doing so for the past couple months or so, too. if i go with an intel processor id prefer not to buy a dell or LG or any other brand then intel because intel supports their own processors best but might have to go amd now depending on the prices of other intel mini-pc's

With the current prices here in Germany on sites like Green IT, AfB, eBay, or Kleinanzeigen, I really feel that the N100 is well worth it.
There's about an €80€ difference between the N100 & the older NUCs at best (for the NUC) currently.
Besides, if you're looking into the N100 boards, they're well cheaper, albeit way bigger.
I'm thinking that this has convinced me to go and buy an N100 chip based board as my next project or intermediate router, maybe. Probably, I'm going to stay away from those NUCs. Oddly enough, other Mini-PCs like ThinkCentres, OptiPlex' and EliteDesks seem to be priced way better in many cases, and I feel like they're regularly on sale (refurbed).
It's absolutely interesting how markets differ in that regard. I think the NUCs never really took off here in Germany (or Europe in general?).
Do not install the flatpak version of OBS, but rather the deb packaged one for your system. That could fix it.
imo Thunderbolt 3 on this is the killer feature that sets it apart from otherwise-similar N100 or N300 machines. it gives you access to faster networking than you'd otherwise be able to have which is potentially a gamechanger for the server use case.
I recently upgraded my home server from an upside down Surface Book on a laptop pad, to an HP Elitedesk 705 G4. It has a Ryzen 5 2400GE and an RX560 w/ 16GB RAM. I’m immensely happy with it, temps are great since getting a ventilated lid, and the 4 core 8 thread architecture is much preferred to an older hyperthreaded dual core.

Features are probably the biggest selling point for a NUC vs a modern mini PC. Thunderbolt opens a whole world of possibilities, and almost none of the mini PCs from china have thunderbolt.
Plus 8th gen based systems with twice the cores don't go for much more money and would blow the pants off either system.
I have this same model at home on Windows 11 running my Plex, Satisfactory, and Conan servers while also being hooked to my TV for some gaming (it'll run Farcry 3 @ 1080p low) or as a Steam Link system to stream from my gaming PC. It's amazingly powerful for what it is, takes no power, fits anywhere… really just a nice overall system.
Just install it into the system using apt or different pm

I got a nucbox g5 to run Mario kart 8 deluxe on suyu by running it at 540p and turning on amd fidelity fx super resolution, some anti shader studder thing, and other performance things to make it smooth

Thanks for making this! My wife and I just bought a house and I'm looking to set up a home Proxmox server and have little NUC PCs at every TV. All of these tests are basically everything I want to do.
Towards the beginning of this year, i found a barebones nuc7 with a Celeron J4005 at a flea market for only 10$. I slapped in 8gb of ddr4 ram and an old ssd i had laying around in it. I used it for a bit, but i later sold it for like 70 bucks. It was a great tiny machine for everyday use and some very light gaming. Intel really nailed it with the NUCs!
My main PC is a mini PC with a Ryzen 7 7840HS 8C/16T 5.1GHz, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, Radeon 780M and 2+2+1TB SSD(s), I bought it for 360€ without RAM and storage(it's not a used product it's in new condition), you can add about 250€ for RAM and the same for storage, so about 360 + (250 * 2) = 860€, and it's a beast the CPU is so fast, it even beats the desktop Ryzen 7 5700X and 5800X, mini PCs have come a long way. 😀
For the driver issue on windows 11, the snappy driver installer tool should be able to fix it.
Honestly i think he picked the wrong NUC. I just looked around and there are NUC with the i5-8259u around for 70 Bucks. The i5-7260u is the last of the pre Ryzen Designs, after that Intel had to step up it's game. The i5-8259u has a higher max power draw but comes with 4 cores and 8 threads, with a higher clock speed. Yes it would be even higher in Power consum then the i5-7260u, but it got nearly twice the compute power as well and it is supported by Windows 11. The Question is: how much higher is the Idle Power-Draw, and i goes not much. When the Performance powerdraw is linear, as it seems in this case, only the Idle Power-Draw matters.
Work vs Power Draw would be the same but the i5-8259u got plenty reserves. To be honest, i would prefer the N100 System over the i5-7260u as this system only offers more PCIE Lanes but not more Performance, but i would prefer a NUC with the i5-8259u for the same Reason. Reasonable Powerdraw on all three systems but the i5-5259u has twice the performance over both. All Systems are Sub 50 Watts and Sub 15 Watts in Idle. Putting them in the same Category. For the Idle Powerdraw one question: Both Systems only with M2 ? Or had the NUC accidently the 2.5" still inside and the Kamrui not ?
I'm using one of these as an HTPC while running Linux. It's been fine except for the fan whine (and I have a hearing loss!), so maybe a batch of these got bad fans, as suggested in a reddit post. I've located a replacement, so time to order one and re-paste.
We use NUCS for everything at work (I work for a medium-sized managed IT provider) and I use NUCS at home for most of my servers too, the new Asus NUCs seem pretty good. they are in a plastic versus an aluminium case but it's still built well. they don't get hot while running and have excellent fan performance. the tooless system is not bad either but it takes a bit to get the bottom of the nuc back on the very first time.
